Found this amazing little bakery, smelled like heaven. Bought this pastry, looked like a pretzel, tasted...well, let's just say it wasn't what I expected. The label was entirely in German, and Google Translate failed me. Anyone know what kind of crazy German pastry I accidentally consumed? Was it some sort of regional delicacy I should have appreciated more?

Could have been a Laugenbrezel with something on top, those are everywhere but sometimes bakeries get creative. If it was sweet and had a pretzel shape, maybe a Mohnschnecke that got flattened in the basket, they're poppy seed rolls with a spiral look. Next time you're at Hackescher Markt, pop into Zeit fur Brot on Rosenthaler Strasse, their stuff has English labels and the cinnamon buns are worth the queue.

ngl it sounds like you might've grabbed a Laugenstange that got squished in the basket, they're basically pretzel sticks but some bakeries shape em weird. or if it had seeds on top and a bit of a sweet kick, could be a Kürbiskernbrötchen with pretzel dough, those are sneaky.

there's a spot called Die Backstube on Oranienburger Strasse that does a mean Dinkel-Laugengebäck, their stuff is usually labeled in both languages if u wanna avoid the mystery next time

honestly coulda been a Quarktaschel. looks like a pretzel sometimes but it's filled with quark cheese and baked. some bakeries do em savory with herbs, some sweet with raisins. if it was kinda tangy and soft inside, that's prob what you had.

next time just point at stuff and say "eins davon bitte" and watch what other people grab. worked for me for years before my german got better. the bakery near u-bahn Weinmeisterstrabe has a killer Kartoffelbrot too if you want something safer.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
