Friedrichstraße Mystery?

Just a plain wooden door. It looked like something out of a movie. I peeked inside, and it was completely dark. Felt a weird vibe, like... something was watching me. Seriously, though, what's the deal with that door? Anyone know its story? I'm dying to know what's behind it!

It's probably the entrance to one of the old artists' studios that used to be in the back buildings. A lot of the pre-war courtyards along there had painters and sculptors working in them, and some of those spaces are still in use. If it was closer to TaubenstraBe, there's a courtyard that leads to a tiny cafe called Cafe Cinema that barely anyone knows about, it's tucked behind a vintage clothing store. The dark doorway might just be the back stairs to someone's apartment, but the lack of a number is weird, maybe the landlord never bothered to put one up because it's a private residential entrance.

honestly, that sounds like the door to one of the old bomb shelters they built under the buildings during the war. there's a bunch of them along friedrichstraße, some are still sealed off. i think one behind the galeries lafayette is used for storage now but they keep it locked. if it was near the corner of mohrenstraße, there's a known one that some urban explorers have tried to get into, but security is pretty tight around there.

I know exactly the door you mean. It's the old service entrance for the Haus Cumberland complex, the big building that takes up almost the whole block between Charlottenstraße and Markgrafenstraße. That door used to lead to a coal delivery shaft back when the building was a luxury hotel in the 1910s, and later the GDR used the basement for document storage. The reason there's no number is that the city renumbered the street in the 1930s and that doorway was technically considered part of the courtyard, not the main facade. It's still used by the janitorial staff for the apartments above, but the door's been dark like that since the 90s when they sealed the old coal chute.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
