Hey guys,

I have a band and I am trying to get shows at local venues in Berlin. Please give me your advice and suggestions for making a proper press kit and approaching venues. Also, I would love recommendations for venues that will be happy to have a three piece experimental, shoe-gazey band.

Please be kind, and thank you in advance! Also happy to hear your funny or weird stories regarding getting gigs!

Something nobody's mentioned yet: get a Künstlermeldung at the Finanzamt early, because a lot of the small bookers in Wedding and Moabit will actually ask for it before they put you on a proper paid bill. It separates you from the casual bands and makes the GEMA and fee conversation much less awkward. For your sound specifically, check out the occasional shoegaze nights at Artliners on Gärtnerstraße or the DIY shows at KvU in Friedrichshain, they book three pieces happily if you can fill a 30 minute set without dead air. My weirdest one was a gig in a Kreuzberg Hinterhof where the "stage" was a pallet and the power cut twice, still ended up with a support slot at Urban Spree out of it because the right person was standing there.

The thing that actually moved the needle for us was applying for the small festival slots, not the clubs. Events like Schokoladen's birthday weekend, the Kreuzberg Pavillon open calls, or the occasional lineup at Zukunft am Ostkreuz are where bookers actually watch what you do live, and one good set there gets you invited back to the regular rooms. For a three piece experimental shoegaze thing, look at places with a real PA and a tolerance for volume: Loophole in Neukölln, Neue Zukunft in Friedrichshain, sometimes Reset Club on a weeknight. Press kit wise, keep it to one page and put the live video first, nobody reads the bio past the first two lines.

for shoegaze stuff in berlin the bill matters more than the press kit tbh. venues like 8mm bar in prenzlauer berg, kastanienallee area, and sometimes urban spree book that sound, but they want to see you fit a lineup, so pitch yourself as support for a band already playing there instead of cold asking for a headline slot. a one page pdf with 2 or 3 tracks, a short bio in german & english, and a real photo gets read way more than a fancy epk.

also walk into the bar around 7 on a random tuesday and talk to whoever is behind the counter, that person often runs the bookings. weirdest gig i ever got was handing a demo to a bartender at schokoladen who turned out to be the booker, played three weeks later for like 40 people and free beer

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
