Nobody's mentioned the Waschsalon situation yet. Plenty of Altbau flats come without a washing machine hookup, so you end up at a laundromat and the decent ones fill up on weekends. Budget an hour and bring coins, the machines at most places don't take cards.

Also worth knowing for anyone arriving in winter: German flats often have no ceiling lights, just wires. You buy your own lamps and you'll be making a trip to a Baumarkt in the first week. And the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from your landlord is separate from the lease itself, so ask for it explicitly or the Bürgeramt will turn you away.

tbh the thing that catches most new arrivals is the Pfand system. every bottle with a deposit is worth 25 cents and crates are worth more, so dont just bin them. the supermarkets have machines (Leergutautomat) that spit out a receipt u can use at the till.

also on Sundays basically everything is closed except some Spätis and bakeries at the stations. plan your grocery run for Saturday or you'll be eating döner again. the döner is fine but not every single day.

If you're moving long term, get on the waiting lists for Genossenschaftswohnungen early. The big ones like Gewobag and Deutsche Wohnen get mentioned a lot but the smaller Genossenschaften (Bewogen, Neuköllner Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft) are where you actually get a fair rent, though the wait is often a year or more and you usually need to show up in person for the first contact. It's slow but it beats paying 20 euros per square meter on the open market.

Also, the Rundfunkbeitrag catches everyone by surprise. It's 18.36 euros a month per household, not per person, and it kicks in automatically once you register an address. You can't really dodge it, the letters find u even in a WG.

Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
