Souterrain Wohnung for €1200?
After months of searching, I have just been offered an apartment and am having a big dilemma over it. The offer is in Steglitz, next to an U-Bahn station, Altbau, 78sqm, 1200 warm… Hallo in die Runde,
After months of searching, I have just been offered an apartment and am having a big dilemma over it. The offer is in Steglitz, next to an U-Bahn station, Altbau, 78sqm, 1200 warm. It also has access to a private garden in the back yard.
The only concern I have is that it is a Souterrain Wohnung which means that the floor is about a metre below ground level. When I visited the place, it seemed reasonably light, but it might have just been a good time of the day. Overall, I am concerned about the usual problems like humidity, risk of a break-in (as the windows are right at ground level) and the lack of natural light.
Has anyone had experience living in such a place? Would you guys take it? I still have six months to go in my current place, so I am not in a particular rush.
yeah the break-in thing is a legit concern, my friend had a souterrain in neukölln and someone just popped the window open while they were asleep. the garden access is nice but not worth the paranoia imo, especially for 1200 in steglitz which isn't exactly a hotspot
I lived in a Souterrain in Kreuzberg for two years and the mold was a constant battle no matter how much I aired it out.
Honestly, for 1200 warm in Steglitz I'd probably pass. You can find something at or above ground level for that price if you're not in a rush, and the mold issue is real even if the light was okay when you visited.
i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.
The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.
One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
