have lived in berlin for over 3 years and I never had any problems. I even felt safer here than in many places, because there are always others around.

But a few weeks back a random guy tried to punch me and take my bag away. It came out of nowhere. It was 0:00 on a weekday by a main road that's usually busy and well lit (döner places around, a lot of cars passing)

I managed to run away. The guy slowly went his way (I was shocked; he did not even make an effort to run) I asked two people who were nearby; (~10 meters down the road locking their bikes) ans asked them if they just saw what happened.

They said that they heard "something" happened, but were not sure if it was an argument and did not want to get involved. So much about civil courage.

Have you ever been attacked or did you have a negative encounter in Berlin? What's your story

i got pickpocketed on the u8 near alexanderplatz around 6pm once, didnt even feel it until i got off and my bag was open. phone was gone but they left my wallet which was weird. reported it at the polizei on friedrichstraße and they were nice but basically said it happens all the time, not much they can do without cctv. still love this city but i keep my phone in my front pocket now especially on crowded trains and at kottbusser tor. been here 5 years otherwise fine, just bad luck i guess

yeah similar thing happened to me near hermannplatz a couple years back, broad daylight even. some guy tried to grab my phone out of my hand on the u-bahn stairs. nobody said a word, just stepped around us. it's frustrating but honestly i think it's less about berlin being dangerous and more about people being scared to intervene. i still feel safe here overall, just keep my wallet in my front pocket and don't have headphones in late at night

tbh the people not stepping in is the worst part. had a dude follow me from a u-bahn station for like 5 blocks once, kept calling stuff at me. couple people looked but nobody said a thing. i get being scared but it's lonely as hell. maybe carry a safety

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
