How does the federal employment agency cover your health insurance + rent after employment termination?

What are the steps to get unemployment benefits? And what is the differentiation in benefits between registering as job-seeking and fully unemployed? I assume I'd register as job-seeking since I don't think I'm legible for full unemployment benefits (mostly worked as a freelancer and less than a year (~11 months) of contracts that required regular payment into social taxes). And if anyone knows whether the process can be done online? Any tips appreciated.

ok so first thing, you gotta get to the Agentur für Arbeit website and register as arbeitssuchend within like 3 days of getting the termination notice. that's the clock that matters. you can do it online with your ID, but honestly the online portal is a maze, so calling them at 0800 4 5555 00 sometimes gets you a faster slot than the digital form.

for the health insurance, your Krankenkasse will keep you covered for a month after the job ends if you were in the gesetzliche system, but after that you need Arbeitslosengeld I to keep the Beiträge paid. since you're short of the 12-month Pflichtbeitragszeit, you won't get ALG I, so you're looking at Bürgergeld (formerly Hartz IV). that's a separate application with the Jobcenter, not the Agentur, and it covers rent + health insurance, but only after you've burned through any savings above 10k or so. you'll need to hand over bank statements and the landlord's rent contract, and they pay the Miete directly to your landlord usually.

registering as arbeitssuchend is just the "I'm looking" flag, but for cash you must file as arbeitslos with the Agentur first (even if you expect to be rejected) because that triggers the Jobcenter referral. you can do both online, but the Jobcenter will demand an in

a small thing but check your last paycheck, sometimes employers pay out unused vacation days or a severance. that counts as income for the Jobcenter and can delay your Bürgeld start. also, if ur on a familienversichert plan through a partner, u might not need the Jobcenter for health insurance at all, just register as arbeitssuchend and pick up a freiwillige or student plan if that fits.

for the online part, the Agentur website works with the AusweisApp, but the Jobcenter on Mehringdamm will still want a face to face. bring a printed copy of ur freelance invoices too, they love asking about those. and if ur rent is over the local Mietobergrenze, theyll only pay up to that limit, so check the current numbers for ur district before u panic about the full amount.

one more thing, if u were freelancing before the contract, the Agentur might count those months if u paid into the gesetzliche rentenversicherung voluntarily. it's a long shot but worth a call, worst case they say no and u move on. get ur bank statements from the last 6 months scanned now, that saves a lot of back and forth later.

One thing nobody mentioned yet: if you were freelancing before, make sure you stop your freelance status officially or at least tell the Jobcenter you're not actively working. They get weird about "selbstständig" flags and might assume you still have income coming in, which can tank your application before it starts.

Also, for the online part, you can do the arbeitssuchend registration through the Agentur's portal with your ID, but the Jobcenter will almost always want a personal meeting. Bring your freelance tax summary from last year, not just the employment contract, because they

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
