Why is spandau area so shady?
it's not really shady, just feels that way because it's so disconnected from the rest of berlin. the ubahn doesn't even go there, so you're stuck with the sbahn and those long bus rides. the area around altstadt is genuinely nice, but the sbahn station itself is a vortex of weird energy, especially at night. i think the reputation comes more from it being a transit hub and having that big shopping center than any real crime stats
Spandau is a mixed bag, it really depends which part you walked through. The area around the Altstadt and the Zitadelle is actually quite nice, but the neighborhoods near the S-Bahn stations like Spandau or Rathaus Spandau can feel rough because of the crowds hanging around the shopping center and the bus terminal. It's not dangerous in a violent sense, just grimy and a bit neglected compared to places like Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg. If you head toward the Havel or the old town center, you'll see a totally different side of it.
the reputation is mostly from the train station area and the big shopping center, that part is definitely grim. but go a few blocks toward the havel or the altstadt and it's a completely different vibe, lots of old buildings and waterfront paths. i actually like the flea market at st. nikolai church on saturdays, it's a real local thing not touristy at all. the problem is most people only see spandau from the sbahn exit and judge the whole district by that one concrete jungle
