What to visit in Berlin as a DDR passionate ?

Like places to eat typical east-german food, communist memorials and brutalist plattenbauten streets ? Thanks :)

try the "kulturbrauerei museum" in prenzlauer berg, it's in an old brewery complex and the permanent exhibit on everyday life in the ddr is way more intimate than the big ones, they have a whole reconstructed kitchen and living room with original wallpaper, smells like stale cigarettes and boiled cabbage, super immersive. for food, go to "max & moritz" on oranienburger straße, it's a classic berlin kneipe that survived both wars and the ddr, they serve a mean "eisbein" with sauerkraut and the waitresses are old school grumpy, that's the authentic experience. and if you want brutalist architecture without the crowds, walk along the "fischerinsel" near the spree, those residential towers from the 70s are pure concrete poetry, plus there's a hidden underground parking garage that was used as a civil defense shelter, you can peek through the grates sometimes

if u want the real deal skip the curated spots and just take the tram 27 out to marzahn, the whole district is basically a plattenbau museum but people actually live there so it's not staged. the "grünberger straße" area in friedrichshain has some killer backyards with original ddr playgrounds, rusty climbing frames and all, feels like time stopped. for food, find a "schrippe" bakery that still does the old school "belegte brötchen" with jagdwurst and pickles, the one at the corner of weberwiese u-bahn is solid and cheap, like 3 euros. also check the "bunker" at schönhauser allee, it's now a gallery but the raw concrete walls and the spiral ramp are pure 60s ddr engineering, no polish added

The DDR Museum is the obvious one, but for something more niche, walk the stretch of Landsberger Allee between Alexanderplatz and the Ringbahn. It's a real open-air gallery of Plattenbauten, including the "WBS 70" blocks, and you'll spot original balcony cladding and those little corner shops still hanging on. For food, skip the touristy stuff and find a "Milchhäuschen" if you can, there's a restored one in the Volkspark Friedrichshain that does proper Quarkkeulchen and a decent Berliner Weisse. The Stasi Museum in Lichtenberg is worth the trip out too, the offices are left almost exactly as they were in 1989, which feels way more eerie than any recreated set.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
