I personally could never cope with all that shit, but she has to go to work on a daily basis and I only visit the office when the weather is good ;)

Today she was fined the 60€ fine for unfolding her Brompton folding bike to early in the nearly empty Regio train. This is a really small bike, even unfolded. She was waiting for the next stop to get out, and had only a ticket for herself, not the bike. The Brompton Bike is free to take with you in BVG and Bahn (there exists even a Brompton bike leasing plan by the Bahn), but has to be folded (ca 60x60cm). It wasn't even completely unfolded, but in the parking position with the rear wheel folded in.

Who makes those rules, that I can transport luggage in whatever size and weight, but if someone unfolds this puny little bike before leaving the train he has to be punished?

Yeah, that 60 euro ticket is rough, but honestly the Regio guys are stricter than BVG for this exact reason. The folding bike rules are technically the same on both, but the train staff on the regional lines seem to get a kick out of enforcing them to the letter, especially when it's raining and everyone's trying to board with wet gear. I've seen them wave through a full-size cargo bike on the S-Bahn at Ostkreuz but then pounce on someone with a Brompton in the folding position, it makes no sense.

My tip: if she's doing that daily, get one of those cheap bike bags from Decathlon, they're like 15 euros. Slip the folded Brompton in there and it's officially "luggage" in everyone's eyes, no questions asked. You can also just keep it in the bag while she's on the platform, takes ten seconds to pop it out once she's off, and it keeps the rain off the seat too.

honestly the real enemy here is the VBB tariff nonsense, not the staff. the 60 euro fine is the standard "no valid ticket" thing, they don't care about the bike size, they care that she didn't have a bike ticket. even if it's folded, if it's not in a bag, some controllers treat it as a bike. the bag trick works, but also check if she can get the VBB Umweltkarte with the bike option, it's like 20 euros extra a month and covers the Regio too. that's what i did, and now i just unfold my bike whenever, nobody says a word because the ticket is already sorted.

also, the Brompton lease thing you mentioned is a trap. it's through Bahn's jobrad program, and the fine still applies if you don't have the bike zusatzticket on regional trains. the BVG is more chill because they know the folding rules, but the Regio is a federal thing, and they're sticklers for the letter of the law. your wife got unlucky with a fresh controller, prob. i'd just contest it, honestly. the parking position thing is a gray area, and if she was waiting to get off, a nice email to the VBB customer service might get it reduced to a warning. happened to a friend with a normal bike, they waived it after he explained the situation. worth a shot before paying.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
