However, I was unable to find anything in that price range. So in the end I paid 110€ for a hostel room. 110€!!!! To share a bed in a dormitory. And it was the cheapest place I could find that didn't have abysmal reviews.

I will admit I looked very short notice, because I didn't know until yesterday I'd have to spend thep night here. But still, normally booking short term still gets me a decent priced hotel room that I don't have to share. And still, the hostel is absolutely packed!

I need to convince my employer that I had no choice but to settle for this. So does anyone have an explanation for this? I'm hoping to convince my employers that I didn't have a choice but to go over budget.

honestly your company's 50€ cap is from like 2015 prices. even pre-pandemic you couldn't get a private room in Berlin for that. tell them to look up the ITB conference or just check what a single bed at a&o goes for rn

It's the ITB travel trade show this week, basically the whole tourism industry is in town. That alone jacks up prices for everything, even hostels way out in Neukölln. For your employer, just show them a screenshot of any hotel booking site filtered to under 50€ for tonight, they'll see it's literally just parking spots and maybe a couch in Lichtenberg.

yeah that price is brutal but honestly not surprising for last minute in Berlin right now. there's like three big conferences happening this week plus some trade fair at Messe, so every room within the ring is getting snapped up way in advance. even hostels near Ostbahnhof or Wedding are pushing 80-100€ for a dorm bed right now.

for your employer, tell them to check booking sites themselves for tonight or tomorrow at under 50€ - they'll see nothing exists that's not a shared room or way out in Spandau. the 110€ you paid is actually on the low end for what's available last minute in Mitte or Friedrichshain. next time try booking direct with a hostel like Generator or Circus, they sometimes hold back a few beds for walk-ins at 60-70€ but even that's a gamble.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
