I will be in Berlin October 1st - Oct 7th. Hoping to visit Pergamon museum on Sunday, when I've read the museums are open to the public for free.

I'm getting mixed messages about the museum. Is it closed? Partially open?

If it is open, are there any suggestions for going on Sunday?

Thank you in advance!

It's open but you're right that the info is confusing. The north wing with the Ishtar Gate is accessible, and that's honestly the highlight for most people anyway. The Pergamon Altar hall has been closed for years now and won't reopen until around 2027.

For the free Sunday, the trick is that you still need a reservation even though it's free. They release the slots on the museum's website every Tuesday at 10am for the following week, and they're usually gone within an hour. If you miss out, you can still try standing in the regular queue but expect a 30-60 minute wait. The museum opens at 10am on Sundays, and the line is shortest around 3pm if you want to avoid the morning rush.

If you can't get in, walk 5 minutes to the Humboldt Forum on Unter den Linden. They have the non-European collections that used to be in Dahlem, and it's free every day without a reservation. The view from the dome is also solid.

Honestly the free Sunday thing is a bit of a gamble. They release the tickets online at midnight on the Tuesday before, not at 10am like some people say - I've grabbed them at 12:05am before and they were already half gone. If you miss the slot, just show up at the door around 4pm, the line is usually dead by then and they let people in without reservations if there's space.

The Ishtar Gate is def worth seeing even with half the museum closed, but tbh the Neues Museum is a better sunday bet for free entry. The Nefertiti bust is in a dim room with no photos allowed but it's stunning. You can walk between both in like 2 minutes across the bridge.

One thing nobody mentions - the Pergamon has a small cafe inside that's actually decent for a quick coffee between galleries. And if you're there on sunday, grab a currywurst from the stand on Am Kupfergraben right outside, it's like 4 euro and way better than the museum food.

yeah it's partially open, the main hall with the altar is closed until like 2027 or something stupid. the Ishtar Gate is still up though, that alone is worth it imo. for the free Sunday thing, you gotta book a slot online like a week before, they go fast. honestly if you cant get in, the Neues Museum right next door is way less crowded and has the Nefertiti bust, which is prob just as cool. sunday is a madhouse on the island, so get there right when it opens or go late afternoon.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
