Recommendations for interesting volunteer opportunities in Berlin for a non-German speaker?

As the title says, I'm wondering if anyone here has some recommendations for volunteer opportunities (preferably in the East/Center of the city) for someone who can only speak around A1 level German.… As the title says, I'm wondering if anyone here has some recommendations for volunteer opportunities (preferably in the East/Center of the city) for someone who can only speak around A1 level German.

I'm particularly interested in human issues (e.g. refugee/immigration issues, homelessness, working with kids/elderly), so ideas along that line would be especially appreciated.

Thanks!

For work with refugees, check out Uber den Tellerrand. They do cooking events where refugees and locals cook together and it's very English-friendly. They're based near Frankfurter Tor so it's central enough, and they have a lot of volunteers who don't speak much German.

For something with elderly people, the Mehrgenerationenhaus in Friedrichshain on Frankfurter Allee is worth a look. They have a regular cafe where older folks hang out and they're always happy to have someone to just sit and chat with them in English. It's more about companionship than language ability there.

I've had friends volunteer at the Kirchenkreis City Berlin's refugee projects around Friedrichshain. They run a few different things like language cafes and homework help for kids where most of the communication is in English anyway, so your A1 level is totally fine. The one on Boxhagener Strasse near the Ringbahn is pretty easy to get to and they're used to non-German speakers showing up. Also check out Berliner Stadtmission, they have a big soup kitchen and clothing distribution near Ostbahnhof that's always looking for extra hands, no German needed for sorting donations or serving food.

The Berliner Obdachlosenhilfe has a small drop-in center near Warschauer Strasse that runs on volunteers, mostly just handing out coffee and sandwiches and having conversations. They're pretty relaxed about language because a lot of the guests are from Eastern Europe or elsewhere and English is the common ground anyway. You just show up for a shift, no application process or long commitment.

Another option is the Kiezklub in Prenzlauer Berg on Stargarder Strasse, they do senior afternoon programs and need people to play board games or just sit and talk. Most of the seniors there speak some English from their working years, and they're usually delighted to practice it. It's a very low-pressure vibe, more like hanging out with grandparents than formal volunteering.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
