Is 900€ for a room "too much" for a room in Pberg?

I was offered a room in a very spacious apartment near Bernauer Straße. 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, one big living room and a big kitchen, I think it also has a balcony as well. I currently live in student housing, small but very affordable and I live alone which is great. However, it's super far away from basically my whole life (Marzahn).

Now, my bf who had the privilege of moving to Berlin 6 years ago and has been paying really cheap rent for a nice apartment in Wilmersdorf (and also being a native German) told me that it's too expensive, telling me about how other people he knows found places in the same area for way cheaper.

What should I do? Should I take it or keep looking and "hoping" I'll find something cheaper in that area? This is actually the first time I find something (as a foreign student who doesn't speak German) in this area in THREE YEARS.

three years and this is the first offer, that's your answer right there. 900 is a lot but the market's not going back to what your boyfriend paid, especially not for a place near bernauer strasse with two bathrooms. the balcony alone is worth something in summer, you'll be glad for it when mauerpark gets too crowded.

the religious community thing is the real factor honestly. being able to walk there instead of taking the ringbahn from marzahn will change your whole week. take it, you can always downgrade later if you find something but you can't force an offer to appear

900 for a room near Bernauer Strasse is basically the going rate now for a place that nice. The WG-gesucht prices you see for 500-600 are usually either scams or someone's friend who's moving out and they need to find a replacement fast.

The two bathrooms thing is actually huge for a WG. I've lived in three different shared apartments in Prenzlberg and the single bathroom situation gets old fast, especially in the morning. Your boyfriend's Wilmersdorf deal is from before the rent explosion, that comparison doesn't really work.

If you've been trying for three years and this is the first solid offer, you have your answer. The religious community proximity is the kind of thing that makes a neighborhood actually work for you, not just look good on paper. Take it and you can always keep an eye out for something cheaper once you're settled in the area.

Your boyfriend's rent in Wilmersdorf is from a different era of Berlin contracts. A new rental in Prenzlberg now is basically a different market entirely. 900 for a room near Bernauer Strasse, especially with two bathrooms and a balcony, is not a scam price.

I'd look at it this way. You've spent three years trying to get into this area and this is the first offer. The commute from Marzahn to wherever your religious community meets is probably eating up your time and energy in a way that's hard to quantify. Living alone in student housing is nice but being isolated is its own cost.

Take the room. You can always move again in a year if you find something better, but having a foothold in the neighborhood will make that search a hundred times easier. You'll be able to walk to viewings and hear about openings through your community rather than fighting on WG-gesucht from Marzahn.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
