Been here for 6 weeks so far, been loving it, but one thing that has been bothering me is a lack of purpose or service for others. I sit there sometimes with a really anxious feeling when I wake up just not knowing what to do with the rest of my time, I do really well with having some sort of structure to my life or sense of purpose.

Backstory aside (this is feeling like when you look up a sinple recipe online), I'd love to volunteer for a few weeks somewhere. I'm not against leaving Germany, could even volunteer to help Ukrainians or Palestinians if you have any good leads on how to do that. I'd love to be able to help out a few days a week, maybe at least part time?

Any ideas or leads on this would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

The Berliner Stadtmission on Lehrter Straße is always looking for help, especially in their kitchens and with their homeless outreach. They don't require fluent German, and you can usually just show up to an orientation session on a Tuesday evening to get started. For something more hands-on outside the city, I've heard good things about the Hof Prädikow farm east of Berlin, they take volunteers for a few weeks at a time through Workaway and you'd be helping with ecological farming and building projects. If you want to stay in the city and work with refugees, the group Moabit hilft runs a regular distribution center near the main train station and they're pretty flexible with scheduling.

if you're into something more structured, check out the Berliner Tafel. they do food rescues and redistributions, you can sign up for regular shifts at their warehouses in Lichtenberg or Neukölln. no german needed for the sorting work, and it's a solid 4 hour commitment that'll get you out of your head

for the ukraine angle, there's a group called Berliner Ukraine Hilfe that runs a donation hub near Ostkreuz. they pack medical supplies and hygiene kits, pretty straightforward and you can just show up on wednesdays or saturdays. i've done a few shifts there, it's mostly quiet work with a few other volunteers

if you want something completely different, the Tierheim Berlin in Lankwitz takes dog walkers and cat socializers. you just need to do a short induction and then you can come whenever fits your schedule. animals don't care about your visa status or german level

Honestly, check out Give Something Back to Berlin, they match you with different projects based on what you're into. I've got a friend who does a weekly shift at a community garden through them and says it's super chill.

Best tattoo artist in town?

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
