Dear All,

ING-DiBa AG is changing its banking terms and conditions starting December 1, 2024.

The minimum monthly deposit required for a free account will be increased by 42.9%, from €700 to €1,000. If you deposit less, a monthly fee of €4.90 will be charged.

The girocard fee has increased by 50.5% (from €0.99 to €1.49 per month). This fee will apply to both main and partner cards in joint accounts.

The foreign transaction fee for non-Euro payments has increased by 10.6% (from 1.99% to 2.20% with a new minimum of €1). This change will also apply to the VISA debit card.

Cash deposits made at ING ATMs will now incur a fee of 1% of the deposit amount, with a minimum charge of €2.50 and a maximum of €7.50. Previously, this service was free.

Would anyone happen to have recommendations for other banking alternatives in Germany?

yeah the ing changes are annoying. check out c24 bank, they're pretty solid and based in berlin actually. free account with no minimum deposit, and you get a free girocard plus mastercard. their app is decent and they do real-time push notifications for transactions. one thing i like is they have a 'pockets' feature for organizing savings, works better than ing's extra accounts imo

If you're in Berlin and want a brick-and-mortar option, Berliner Sparkasse is worth a look. Their free online account has no minimum deposit and includes a free girocard, though the app isn't as polished as ING's. The main downside is their foreign transaction fee is 1.75%, but you can avoid that by using a separate card like Revolut for travel. I've found their customer service at the Friedrichstraße branch to be pretty helpful in person.

Try N26 or DKB, they both have free accounts and no minimum deposit nonsense.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
