I'm a black Barbadian who has freshly arrived in Berlin and I can't help but notice that sometimes I'm the only black person in my environment.

Where do the black ppl in Germany (I'm curious about Berlin) work ? Where do you live ? What do you do for fun?

honestly the scene's more scattered than in london or nyc, but there's a real caribbean and african diaspora network if u know where to poke around. werkstatt der kulturen in neukölln does a bunch of pan-african film stuff and sunday brunches that draw a mixed crowd, not just tourists. also check out the black german community online, like the "each one teach one" facebook group, they post random meetups from chess nights to poetry slams.

for living, a lot of black folks end up in wedding or moabit since rents are still semi-human there, but you'll see people in lichtenberg too if you're on a budget. work-wise, think public transit, nursing, or the uni scene as a research assistant, that's where i've bumped into the most. for fun, the "afrobeat sunday" at yaam in kreuzberg is a vibe, but it gets packed, go early. also, if you miss home cooking, there's a tiny bajan-ish spot near frankfurter tor that does proper roti, not the germanized version. give it a month, you'll start recognizing faces on the u8.

neukölln around weserstrasse is the closest thing to a caribbean corner but honestly the real move is finding the african hair salons, that's where the community actually talks. i'm not even exaggerating, walk into any spot on sonnenallee and ask the ladies where they get their sunday food, you'll get a whole network.

for work i see a lot of black folks in the berlin brandenburg airport and the hospitals, but also the it sector if u have the skills, there's a growing west african dev crew that does meetups at the cbase in friedrichshain sometimes. living wise, wedding is where the vibe is more mixed but if u want actual neighbors who look like u, check out the highrises near the osloer strasse sbahn, that's a whole community.

fun though, the best thing is the monthly "black berlin" jam at the kantine am berghain, not the club itself, the smaller venue next door. it's a proper mix of reggae, afrobeats and soca, and it's the only place i've seen bajan flags in berlin. also, there's a small afro-caribbean grocery near the leopoldplatz that sells mauby and proper ginger beer, that'll cure some homesickness. just show up to stuff alone, people here are actually friendly once u break the ice, it's just the german staring that

welcome to berlin, it's a real adjustment sometimes, i get it. most of us aren't concentrated in one 'hood, but you'll find a solid scene in neukölln and kreuzberg, especially around weserstrasse and the area near hermannplatz. a lot of black folks work in health care, logistics, or run their own small shops, but there's also a big creative crowd in media and design if you look for it.

for fun, check out the afro-berlin collective events, they do film nights and meetups at places like the ufa fabrik or at various bars in wedding. also, the black book fair happens yearly and is a good way to meet people without it being a club scene. honestly, the best way is to just start going to the same spots regularly, like the little caribbean spot on sonnenallee, and you'll start seeing familiar faces. it takes time, but the community is there, just more spread out than you might be used to.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
