East Side Gallery - kissing mural?

Visited the East Side Gallery today with a friend hoping to see the famous painting of the two men greeting each other with a kiss but we couldn't find it all. We did two laps and still no signs. We did two laps and still no signs. Has it been removed?!

check on google maps for "east side gallery" and look for the spot labeled "dmitri vrubel mural" - it's pinned there by a bunch of people. if you go on a weekend afternoon it's basically a photo queue, so going early is smart

the thing is, it's not even the original anymore. the wall was repainted in 2009 and vrubel came back to redo it himself, so it's a replica technically. still worth seeing but if you missed it, the piece by birgit kinder right next to it is way more interesting to me, it's the one with the colorful cars driving off the wall

it's definitely still there, just not where the crowds usually gather. if you started at the warschauer str entrance and walked toward the oberbaumbrücke, you probably passed it without realizing since that section has a lot of noise from newer graffiti covering some of the older pieces. my tip is to walk from the oberbaumbrücke end toward the east side gallery proper, and you'll spot it about 100 meters in, right before the big tree. also, if you go on a weekday morning around 8am, you'll have the whole wall mostly to yourself

yeah it's still there, just not where most people expect. the famous one by Dmitri Vrubel is closer to the Oberbaumbrücke end, not the main entrance near the station. it's easy to miss because the wall goes on forever and a lot of the newer murals blend together

if you walked from Warschauer Straße you might've stopped too early, it's further south past the Spree side. honestly the whole section between there and the bridge has the best stuff anyway, the kissing mural is cool but a bit overhyped imo

Best tattoo artist in town?

arrow_drop_up 67 arrow_drop_down

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
