Hallo!

I'm a student who's going to be moving to Berlin in a month and finding (studio) apartments is really hard.

I came a across a listing by SpotAHome which is a room in €800 and it is perfect for me in all ways. The problem is that, my estimated time of move-in is not clear right now but I'm willing to book a room anyway. This'll cost me around €2600 (rent+deposit+other charges) even before I move to Berlin.

I need reviews for this site. They have impressive reviews on TrustPilot but does anyone here have any experience with SpotAHome? Should I make that payment or not? Thanks!

I'd look at this from a different angle. SpotAHome is legit in the sense that they're a real company with an office in Berlin, but the model itself is risky for someone in your situation. They're basically a short-term rental platform that charges a booking fee on top of rent, so you're paying a premium for convenience without the protections of a standard German rental contract. If your move-in date shifts, their cancellation policy is strict and you might lose that booking fee entirely.

For 800 euros, a studio through SpotAHome would likely be in an area like Moabit or parts of Friedrichshain that are further from the U-Bahn, not exactly central. You could try looking at the Studentenwerk Berlin for their dormitory waiting lists, they have studios in places like Schlachtensee or Adlershof for around 500-600 euros. Another option is to book a cheap temporary room through Airbnb or a hostel for your first two weeks, then visit apartments in person and sign a proper contract once you're here and know your move-in date.

honestly i'd be careful. 800 for a studio is suspiciously low in berlin right now, most legit ones start around 900-1000 even in outer neighborhoods like wedding or neukölln. spotahome is basically a booking platform, not a landlord, so you're paying middleman fees for a room you haven't seen in person. trustpilot reviews can be bought or from people who got lucky, but i've heard stories of flats being nothing like the photos or the contract being a nightmare to cancel. if ur move-in date isn't fixed yet, handing over 2600 now feels risky, especially since berlin rental laws heavily favor tenants once you have a contract signed in person. maybe look into zwischenmiete or temporary sublets on wg-gesucht first, those are more common for students and less upfront cost

Yeah, I'd be super cautious with that. I had a friend who used SpotAHome and the listing said "fully furnished" but when she got there it was just a mattress on the floor and no kitchen stuff. Also, €2600 upfront before you even see the place is a lot, especially if your move-in date is flexible. For students, it's way safer to look for a Zwischenmiete on WG-Gesucht or even Facebook groups like "Berlin Housing" where you can actually video call the current tenant and see the room live.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
