Rental Gardens information?

I recently moved to Berlin, and on my walk to work I noticed a large plot of land dedicated to what appears to be small gardens. Upon researching, it seems that one can rent the plot but that it can take months to get off the wait list.

This is something I'm likely interested in for my wife who loves to garden, but I cannot figure out where to get on the wait list, or how much it costs. Nor can I figure out exactly the name of this location.

The sign says "südkreuz" which is of course the area, but beyond that I don't see anything come up when I google südkreuz gardens.

I figure to be here around 5 years so I'm okay waiting a while, and I assume you cannot do much during the winter but if you can... I would love to hear it!

So my question: where can I find information on this, and if anyone has experience with renting these plots I would love to hear advice and stories!

One thing that hasn't come up yet is that your wife doesn't have to wait for a full plot to start gardening here. Plenty of Berlin neighbourhoods have "Gartenpatenschaft" programs where the city lets you adopt a public green space or a tree bed for planting. Tempelhof-Schoneberg runs one through their Grünflachenamt, you just sign a simple agreement and they give you the key to the water tap nearby. It's not the same as having your own Kleingarten but it's immediate and free, and she can grow flowers or vegetables right on the street. Could be a good bridge while you wait on the Verein lists.

Also worth knowing that the Südkreuz gardens have a specific rule about the hut size and materials. The previous renter's shed has to meet the Verein's standard or you'll have to replace it, which can cost a few hundred extra if it's a wooden one that's too big. When you finally get offered a plot, ask to see the "Laube" first and check if it's registered as conforming. Saves you a surprise fee right after you take over.

You've spotted the Kleingartenanlage Am Sudkreuz, it runs right along the S-Bahn tracks between Sudkreuz and Schoneberg. The official way in is through the Landesverband Berlin der Gartenfreunde site, they have a map of every verein in the city with contact info.

Here's the thing nobody tells you about the waitlist - it's not a single city-wide list. Each individual verein manages its own, so you can sign up at multiple ones at once to improve your odds. The Anlage Am Sudkreuz is popular because of the location, but if you're willing to walk a bit further, try the vereine over in Friedenau or Steglitz, they're quieter and the lists move faster.

For winter gardening, your wife can absolutely keep things going. Root vegetables like carrots and parsnips actually get sweeter after a frost, and you can grow winter lettuce under a simple cold frame. The verein rules usually require you to keep the plot tidy year round anyway, so having something growing in winter makes that easier.

the other reply got the basics right. one thing nobody mentioned - those gardens at südkreuz are actually part of the "kleingartenanlage am südkreuz" verein, right next to the s-bahn tracks. you can just walk over there on a saturday morning and knock on the door of the garden hut, usually someone's there watering or weeding. they'll tell you if there's a waitlist or if any plots are coming free soon.

winter is actually fine for gardening here if you're hardy. i know people who grow winter spinach and kale under fleece covers, and you can definitely do cold frame stuff. but more importantly, getting on the list now means by spring 2026 you'd potentially have a plot ready to plant. the verein fees are usually around 60-80€ a year plus water, and the sub-lease from the previous renter can be a few hundred for their shed and tools.

one tip - if you speak even basic german, handle everything in german. the older verein members who run things appreciate it and it'll move you up the mental list faster than english emails.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
