I'm pretty sure everyone here is aware about the housing market crisis here in Berlin. My current contract ends in a few months and I'm getting a bit anxious preparing to face the whole house-hunting problem soon.
There are clearly two extremes at play: Cheap rents prices which are basically impossible to get, and stratosferic prices which make it almost instant for rich people.
I know it's shit for basically everyone, but I'm trying to understand where I stand in this spectrum. How much income (or what rent price) would you say is enough to make it decently possible or easy to find something in 1-3 months? With mine I would probably be looking for something aroud 1100-1200 cold rent.
Extra info: I'm not particular about size or location (<1h commute to berlin center is fine), single, no kids. Not good with german language yet. Stable job.
With 1100-1200 cold you're in a solid spot for a 2-room place in rings 2 or 3, think Wedding, Neukolln, or Lichtenberg. The real barrier is your German level since many smaller landlords or Hausverwaltungen still insist on German communication. You could try getting a friend or colleague to draft a template email in German that you just tweak per listing, that alone bumps your response rate noticeably. Also check WG-Gesucht for '1-Zimmer-Wohnung' listings, sometimes private landlords post there instead of Immoscout and are more flexible.
Yeah 1100-1200 cold is decent, plenty of people get places around that. The main headache will be proving your income is stable since landlords love seeing a permanent contract in Germany.

The trick is to stop looking at Immoscout and start writing direct, short emails to the Hausverwaltung or landlords listed on the ad, or even better, look for "Nachmieter" listings on eBay Kleinanzeigen where you take over someone's existing contract.
What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?
Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.
if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point
honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
