Fined incorrectly on trip from Treptower Park to Wannsee?

Jumped on S7 to Postdam Hbf at 17:12 with intention to get off at Nikolasse and immediately got fined for "Travelling in the direction back to Treptower Park".
The 60€ fine receipt says I was fined on the S3 line to Tiergarten (I was on the S7 to Potsdam Hbf)
I do not understand how we were travelling backwards by taking the S7 to Potsdam Hbf. Did I genuinely make a mistake here and would an appeal have any merit?
The ticket officer said if I had "gotten off at Westkreuz 15 mins earlier" I would have not been fined, but this didn't make any more sense.
Was he confused due to the fact that all S-bahn trains from Zoologischer Garten terminated there and were returning back to Potsdam Hbf?
