I'm talking about accommodation other than the one provided by studierendenwerk, as it has a looong waiting list rn (18+ months).

I have heard many students live in outskirts of Berlin or in Potsdam. Can I get any leads about in which area I should look for WGs?

potsdam is actually a solid option if you don't mind the 30min sbahn ride to the campus. rents are noticeably cheaper and you get way more space for your money compared to anything in steglitz or dahlem. the sbahn 7 runs pretty frequently so it's not a hassle

a lot of students also end up in tempelhof or schöneberg which is a bit closer and still has decent prices if you look in the right spots. just avoid anything marketed as "zentral" near the zoo or friedrichstraße unless you want to blow half your budget on rent alone

If you're on a tight budget, look into the area around Rathaus Steglitz or even further south towards Marienfelde. The U9 and S1 lines make it easy to get to the FU campus in Dahlem, and you can often find cheaper rooms in the older buildings there. Just be prepared for a quieter neighborhood vibe, not much nightlife but plenty of Lidl and Netto options.

Yeah a lot of FU folks end up in places like Steglitz, Dahlem, or even further out in Lankwitz. Those areas are pretty well connected by bus and U-Bahn to the campus, and rents are way more manageable than in central districts like Neukölln or Kreuzberg.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
