I'm on the hunt for affordable but high-quality jewelry in Berlin and I'm wondering if anyone knows of jewelers or markets that sell items from pawnshops or auctions.

For context, in Essen there's the Schmuck & Uhren Markt at the Essen Auction Hall. They sell confiscated jewelry from tax offices and pawnshops, often at 50-70% off compared to regular retail prices.

I'm looking for something similar in Berlin. Does anyone know of one?

The real insider move here is Bares für Rares, but that's TV. For actual shops, check the Jüdische Gemeinde's secondhand bazaar near the Synagoge on Oranienburger Straße, they occasionally have estate pieces from older collectors, way less picked over than the tourist flea markets. Another angle is the VEB Orange in Friedrichshain, it's a vintage store that takes in old gold and watches from private sellers, prices are fair because they don't have the pawnshop markup, just be ready to negotiate a bit. If you want the auction route, Klassik Radikal on Köpenicker Straße does themed estate sales a few times a year, they list jewelry in the catalog online and you can bid in person, last time I saw a 14k chain go for under scrap value.

bricke & schmuck on torstraße does buyouts n resells but it's hit or miss. if u want the real deal, check the zwangsversteigerung listings at the amtsgericht, they publish jewelry auctions online. also flea markets like mauerpark or nowkoelln sometimes have guys selling old gold, u gotta haggle hard tho. i'd skip the touristy spots, the kilo shops are overpriced for what they are.

Dunno about pawnshop specific spots, but the Bode Museum has those old coin and medal cases that give you ideas for vintage styles. If you want the real deal, try the Rathaus Spandau area on flea market Saturdays, there is a guy with a velvet case full of estate

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
