Recommended jeweler for engagement ring <600€?

If you're open to a bit of a hunt, the Flohmarkt at Fehrbelliner Platz on Saturdays has a few jewelry stalls that fly under the radar. It's mostly furniture and old bric-a-brac, but there's one older guy near the U-Bahn exit who brings a small box of antique rings, mostly silver and some older gold pieces. I saw a simple 14k band with a small peridot there last month for around 200, and he's not pushy, which is a relief compared to the tourist spots.

For the stone setting, I'd recommend Werkstatt Gold on Oranienstraße in Kreuzberg, they're a bit hidden in a courtyard but do clean work on a budget. They set a loose stone I brought for 80 euros, and they'll tell you straight if a ring needs more work than it's worth. If you do go the estate route, make sure you budget for a professional cleaning and prong check, a ring that's been sitting in a box for decades can look dull until it gets a proper polish.

There's a quiet little workshop in Schöneberg, Goldschmiede Rabe on Akazienstraße, that's been around for decades and doesn't advertise much. They mostly do repairs for older clients, but the owner takes on custom engagement rings when he's not backed up, and he'll work with whatever budget you give him. I had a friend get a simple yellow gold band with a tiny old mine cut diamond there for 480, and he was honest about where the costs went, which is rare.

Also worth a look is the second hand market at Arkonaplatz on Sunday mornings, not as famous as Mauerpark but less picked over. There's a woman with a stall near the church who sells inherited jewelry from old Berlin families, and she's open to offers if you're paying cash. I've seen decent solitaires go for 300 to 500, though you'll want to check the prongs on the spot.

another angle: skip the jeweler for the stone and buy it loose. there's a gem dealer at the Zitrone weekly market near Kollwitzplatz, he's got a table of loose stones every friday morning, way cheaper than retail. got a small green garnet there for 90 euros, then took it to Goldschmiede Lehmann on Danziger Straße, they set it in a plain silver band for 120. total under 250 and it's completely one of a kind.

if you want something less DIY, check out the ring makers at the RAW flea market in Friedrichshain, there's a guy who works on site and does simple bands from scrap silver for like 60 euros. not fancy but he'll engrave it for free while you wait. honestly for 600 you've got room to play, so don't blow it all on one shop.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
