I know that housing situation in berlin is messed up, I'm coming there for studies and want to go to dorms first months I'm there bc i'm not in the city yet to go to viewings. Then i want to rent a room. What is the best month(s) / time of the year to search for flats ? I just want to know til when it's better to book my dorms. Thanks 🫶🏻

honestly the sweet spot is late september through october, right after the semester rush dies down. tons of students who came for summer semester or failed their exams move out then, so WG-gesucht and ebay kleinanzeigen get flooded with listings. january and february are also decent, since people bail after the holidays and landlords get desperate before winter breaks.

if you're booking dorms, i'd aim for 3 to 4 months max from when you land. that covers you through the worst of it (october is chaos, honestly) and lets you hit the november lull when prices drop a bit. avoid july and august like the plague, that's when every intern and exchange student shows up and landlords know they can charge whatever.

also don't sleep on facebook groups like "wohnung in berlin" or "flatshare berlin", those sometimes have rooms listed before they hit the big sites. and if you can, set up a few viewings for the first week you're in the dorm, even if you're not ready to move yet, just to get a feel for what 400-600 euro actually gets you in your preferred kiez.

yeah what they said, but also keep in mind the whole "winter semester" thing. most leases here run from october to september or april to march, so the real turnover happens end of march and end of september. if you can time your search for the first two weeks of april, that's another window, less competitive than october tbh.

for dorms, i'd say book 4 to 5 months just to be safe. you don't wanna be stuck in a temp place while hunting, that stress is real. and check out zwischenmiete (sub

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
