Hi Redditers and Berliners from all over.

It is to my knowledge that rent is capped in Berlin, and some calculators like Conny sell you from a calculation to a handling the recovery of your hard earned money

Recently, I have started renting, with a contract for only my room and usage of the common areas (bathroom and kitchen), living with 4 other people. I cannot complain on the location, but sharing an 85m2 apartment between 5 people and making each pay around 700€ seems quite much. I have checked my contract and there is no mention of kalt and warm, just that my 750€ includes all utilities.

Do you know if shared apartments rented via multiple contracts still have their rent capped?

Thanks a lot

The Mietpreisbremse still applies to shared flats with separate contracts, but your all-in rate makes it hard to check. You'd need to know your actual "Kaltmiete" to compare it against the local Mietspiegel, which you can look up yourself without paying anyone.

yeah the cap applies to shared flats too but it gets tricky with inclusive rent like yours since they can hide costs in the "utilities" part. 750 for a room in a 5-person flat sounds steep for Berlin tbh, you can check your mietpreisbremse eligibility via the Berliner Mietspiegel online for free without using Conny

Berlin rent cap applies to separate rental agreements in shared flats the same as whole apartments. But your problem is the "all inclusive" setup. When utilities are bundled, landlords can shift money around to make the base rent look lower, but your 700 euros might not be base rent at all. If

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
