Is Berlin city a pet friendly especially for big dogs?

Hi, I'm moving to Berlin with my boyfriend with our 4 year old golden retriever. Is this a good city for pets especially big dogs? Interested to learn more about this city! haha you're getting a lot of good tips already. one thing nobody mentioned is the vet situation for emergencies, there's no 24/7 animal hospital central in the city, u gotta know which tierklinik is on call that night, check the app "vetline" or just google "tiernotdienst berlin" when u land, saves u a panic at 2am. also for a golden, the shedding is real here, the apartment dust is a mix of dog hair and pollen, get a good vacuum before u unpack, i use a dyson and still find fur in my coffee.

another angle: the u-bahn is fine but the s-bahn is actually chillier, less crowded and u can let ur dog sit on the floor without blocking the aisle. and if ur boyfriend works from home, the coworking spaces with dog areas are popping up, like betahaus in kreuzberg lets dogs in, but they charge a small fee per day, like 5 euros, and it's first come first serve for the big dog spots.

for food, the dog-friendly cafes are mostly around prenzlauer berg and friedrichshain, but the real move is the späti (corner shop) culture, u can grab a beer and a sausage and sit outside with ur dog, nobody bats an eye. just watch out for the pigeons, they're fearless and will steal ur dog's snack if u aren't careful.

yeah berlin's pretty great for big dogs tbh. tons of parks and the u-bahn lets dogs ride with a ticket, which is like 2 euros for a day pass, and most cafes with outdoor seating won't kick u out if the dog's chill. the big thing is the leash rules tho, in some areas like tempelhof field dogs have to stay on leash during breeding season, but there are dedicated off-leash zones, check the ordnungsamt website for the map. also, vets are everywhere and prices are way lower than the us, but make sure u get pet insurance, i use agila, it's around 30 euros a month for a big dog. one thing that might surprise u is how many apartments have no elevator and the stairs can be brutal for a golden, so look for a place with a lift or ground floor, the housing search is the real challenge here.

real talk, the dog tax thing is real but nobody mentions you can split it if you both register as owners, saves a bit. also, golden retrievers are like the unofficial dog of berlin, you'll see a million of them at every park, so your boy will fit right in socially.

for the apartment search, i'd skip the big portals and just walk around the neighborhood you like, lots of old-school hausverwaltungen still put "wohnung frei" signs in the window and they're way more chill than the online landlords, one guy literally just asked if my dog bites and that was it.

if you're coming from the us, the biggest adjustment is the vet visits for the u-bahn ticket, it's not just a stamp, they actually check the chip matches the paperwork, so bring all the original docs from your old vet, not copies.

oh and the späti thing is real, but the best ones for dogs are the ones with the little bench outside, there's one on weserstraße that even has a water bowl, the owner's a big dog guy himself. just don't let your golden eat the dropped döner scraps off the ground, that's how they learn to be sidewalk hoovers.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
