We moved from Friedrichshain to a row house in Pankow three years ago with two kids. The space is incredible, having a yard changes everything for the kids, and I don't miss the noise or the constant secondhand smoke from the bar below our old flat. But the trade-off is real: you lose the village feeling of the Kiez, where you know every shopkeeper and your kids can walk to school alone. The commute for school dropoffs and after-school activities eats up way more time than I expected, and you'll need a car or a very good bike setup. If you can find something in a row house settlement with its own little community, like some parts of Niederschönhausen, it can be closer to the Kiez vibe than a standalone house in the middle of nowhere.

i know a few people who did the swap and honestly some love it and some moved back. the big thing is you trade spontaneity for space and a garden. you will spend way more time schlepping kids to stuff and less time popping into a cafe while they play at the playground. but if you can find a place with good sbahn connection and a decent dorfkita it might be worth it. just don't underestimate how quiet it gets at night lol

Honestly the biggest shock for us was how much the social life changes. In the Kiez you can just bump into people at the playground or the späti, but in the suburbs you gotta actually plan every meetup. We do have a garden now and the kids love it, but I miss just sending them down to the Hof to play with neighbors. Also the commute to Kita is a real drag if you're not right next to one.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
