Where can I get a piece of window glass cut to size in Berlin? For cheap

I removed the glass and need to replace with a new panel. It seems easy to do myself- by getting a piece of glass that fits and using some sealant

I can't figure out if Bauhaus or other hardware store offer this service

Does anyone have any recommendations?

If you're measuring yourself, remember to subtract a few millimeters on each side so the pane isn't fighting the frame when you slide it in. The old glass likely had some play in it, and a tight fit will just crack again with the next temperature swing.

For the cheapest route, skip the big stores entirely. Look up your nearest "Glaserei" on Google Maps, most of them are small family spots that have been around for decades. The one near me in Neukölln charged me 8 euros for a custom cut pane last year, and they didn't even blink when I walked in with a broken frame under my arm. Just call ahead, some of them close early on Fridays and might only have the cutting machine running in the morning hours.

check your mietvertrag or hausordnung first, if it's a rental the landlord might actually have to fix this and you could be wasting money doing it yourself. but if you're set on diy, the glaserei on warschauer straße near the ostkreuz end does single panes for like 6 euro and they'll grind the edges smooth so you don't slice yourself when installing. also, whatever you do, don't get regular glass, ask for "float glass" or "einscheibensicherheitsglas" if the pane is big, because normal stuff will shatter worse next storm. and honestly, the sealant matters more than the cut, get a butyl rubber one from any baumarkt, not silicone, it stays flexible in the cold. bring the old frame with you if u can, they'll tell u if it's actually the frame that's warped and needs shimming.

there's a glaserei on schlesische straße, right near the oberbaumbrücke side, that does walk-in cuts for like 4 or 5 euro a pane. small place, guy's been there forever, doesnt speak much english but he gets it if you show him the frame. cash only though, so hit the atm first.

also worth checking if your building has a hausmeister or a neighbors who've dealt with this. old berlin tenements have weird non-standard window sizes, so the "standard" pane from a baumarkt often wont fit right anyway. measure the opening at the top, middle, and bottom, and use the skinniest number minus 3mm. if you bring the broken pieces, even better, theyll match the thickness exactly.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
