Hello Berliners,

I'm switching internet providers and want to buy a new router instead of using the basic ones they provide. I work from home, use a smart TV for IPTV, and regularly play PS5. I've found Asus routers more affordable than Fritzbox, but I'm open to other suggestions. Any recommendations?

Asus models I checked, let me know if there are better ones for my use case

Asus RT-AX86U

I have the RT-AX86U in my Altbau in Prenzlauer Berg and it handles three people working from home plus a PS5 without breaking a sweat. The game port feature actually makes a noticeable difference for online gaming, not just marketing fluff.

If you're in a newer building with thinner walls the RT-AX82U would be fine and save you some cash. You can pick both up at Saturn or Cyberport, but check Kleinanzeigen first, there are always people selling them after switching to fiber and getting a free Fritzbox from their provider.

One thing nobody mentioned, make sure whatever you buy supports Mesh if your flat is over 80sqm or has those thick Berlin walls. The Asus AiMesh system works well if you need to add a second unit later.

honestly for PS5 and IPTV the Asus RT-AX86U is a beast but i'd also look at the Xiaomi AX9000 if you want something a bit cheaper. it handles multiple devices well and the signal is solid even through thick walls in old Berlin buildings. just make sure to flash the firmware first, the stock one is a bit bloated.

asus rt-ax86u is solid for ps5 but if u want something cheaper look at tp-link archer ax73, works fine with iptv and home office stuff

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
