Few people in my neighborhood streets, restaurants usually have a walk-in table available. Yesterday evening around 22-23:00 I took a walk from Kastanienallee down to Friedrichstr. and most of the bars on Auguststr, Oranienburgerstr were really empty. I have also heard from few parents that finding a Kita place has suddenly become quite easy.

What is going on? Is it just me or do others feel the same? Is it possible that people are moving away? Is it maybe just holiday season? πŸ€”

It's partly the summer lull, sure, but I think there's more to it. A lot of the tech and startup crowd that flooded Prenzlberg and Mitte during the pandemic are leaving now that remote work is less common or they're moving back to where they came from. I've noticed a few of my neighbors listing their flats on Airbnb or selling up entirely, and the cafes around Helmholtzplatz feel less crowded even on weekends.

summer lull is real but i think there's something else too. a bunch of families i know moved out to brandenburg or further out in the last year, partly because rent hikes and partly because they wanted more space. the kita thing tracks with that, fewer kids means more spots open up. if you walk around warschauer or boxi on a weekend it's still packed though, so it might just be your specific corner getting quieter

honestly its prob just the summer lull, lots of people go on holiday or leave for a bit. august is usually dead in berlin

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
