A few weeks ago I sent request to Ausländerbehörde to extend my residence permit.

They have responded to me now and giving me an option to convert it to Blue Card.

I am not sure if I should do it. Are there any benefits for a Blue Card over a residence permit?

I am close to getting B1 in German and I want to apply for a PR soon. If I switch to a blue card now will I have to wait another 21 months to apply for a PR ?

tbh the Blue Card is usually better if you want PR faster. With B1 German, you can apply for PR after 21 months on a Blue Card instead of 33 months on a regular permit. If you already have some residence time, that might count toward the 21 months but double check with the case officer.

the main perk is you can change jobs more freely without needing permission every time. Just have to notify them within 6 weeks if you switch fields. Downside is you need a job paying over 45k or so, but if you already have that it's fine.

imo go for it. Worst case you lose nothing, best case you get PR way quicker. Just ask them if your existing time counts toward the 21 month clock before you switch.

One practical thing about the Blue Card is that it makes the process smoother if you switch jobs to a completely different field. With a regular permit, the Auslanderbehorde often needs to re-check the labor market condition, which can be a pain. On the Blue Card, as long as the new job still meets the salary threshold, it's mostly just a notification.

For your PR clock, the 21 or 33 months are counted from the date you first held a Blue Card, not from your initial residence permit. So if you switch now, your previous time on the regular permit won't count toward the Blue Card PR track. But if you're still early in your current permit, it might not matter much.

Keep in mind too that the Blue Card salary threshold for 2025 is around 45,300 euros for regular professions and lower for IT or STEM fields. If your current salary is already above that, it's a no-brainer. If it's close, make sure your employer can confirm it before you agree to the switch.

honestly the blue card is also better if you ever want to switch employers. with a regular permit you need approval from the labor office every time, which can take weeks. blue card you just notify them, way less hassle.

one thing nobody mentions is that blue card holders get easier access to permanent residence in other eu countries later if you move. not urgent for you now but it's a nice bonus.

for your PR timeline, the 21 months clock starts from when you get the blue card, not from your first permit. so yeah it might reset your count. but if you're only a few months in anyway, switching now wouldn't hurt much. ask your sachbearbeiter specifically if they'll credit your current time.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
