Male flatmate is bringing girls over and causing noise. It's stressful and I can't sleep. Anything I could do legally?

I'm 23 and he is 29 and our families also know each other. This guy brings different women over during the nights(1am 2am) which stay over and in the morning also uses the kitchen and don't clean up. Initially he had loud sex, which I complained about and he atleast for some nights was silent, but now again doesn't care. I also brought a guy over few times for the night but I respected the noise.

I've been tolerating the noise since I moved in here. And now it's causing me stress during the night as I can't sleep and can't focus in the university. I'm subletting one of the rooms. Is there anything I could do legally to have him out of the apartment? Or atleast respect the silent hours?

honestly your best bet is to talk to him one more time but like, in writing. send a whatsapp or text so you have proof you asked. the legal route is tricky in a sublet situation cause you're not the hauptmieter, you're just renting a room from him.

if that doesn't work, contact your local bezirksamt for a noise complaint. they can send someone to check during the nachtruhe (10pm-6am). but fair warning, it takes time and they usually just give a warning first time. also check your mietvertrag - some sublets have stricter rules about guests staying overnight.

if he's the hauptmieter and you're subletting, he can actually kick you out pretty easily depending on your contract terms. so moving out might be the less stressful option in the long run, even though it sucks with the family connection.

I'd check your Untermietvertrag first, if you even have one. A lot of these informal sublets with friends don't have a written contract, and without that you're basically living there on his goodwill. If there's no contract, he can tell you to leave with whatever notice period you two agreed on verbally, usually two weeks to a month.

The noise complaint route through the Bezirksamt is possible but slow, and if he's the Hauptmieter, he'll know it was you who called. That's going to make living together impossible. I've seen this situation play out with friends from back home before, and the one who sublets always ends up moving out in the end anyway.

Maybe offer to switch rooms if his is further from the street or has better soundproofing. The Altbau walls in Berlin are terrible for noise, and a room facing the courtyard instead of the street can make a real difference. It's a compromise that doesn't involve calling authorities or his parents.

fwiw the legal route is kinda overkill for this situation. you're subletting from him which means you're already on shaky ground, and getting the bezirksamt involved will just nuke whatever relationship you have left with his family back home.

a practical thing that worked for a friend in a similar spot in neukölln was just switching to sleeping with earplugs and a white noise machine for a few weeks while he found a new place. the yellow ones from dm for like 2 euros work better than you'd think. it's not a permanent fix but it buys you time to look for something else without the drama.

if you really wanna stay, talk to him about a fixed schedule for guests maybe. like no visitors after midnight on weekdays. frame it as "i need to sleep for uni" not "you're being an asshole" cause that'll just make him defensive. but tbh start looking for a new WG now, the berlin rental market takes a while and you don't want to be stuck there when finals hit

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
