Alt-Tegel accommodation - good idea?

Though the place itself is not bad, I feel as a 26 year old working person Alt Tegel is a bit too far from everything, but everyone I know is mentioning that its a catch. The infrastructure is also a bit old.

Any advice would be much appreciated (and experiences to share!)

740 warm for an Altbau in Alt-Tegel is a solid price, no doubt. You're right that it's not the most central spot, but the U6 gets you to Friedrichstraße in about 25 minutes, which isn't terrible. The bigger issue is that the neighborhood itself is pretty quiet, mostly families and retirees, so if you're into spontaneous nights out or late bars nearby, you'll be relying on the U-Bahn to get back to Wedding or Mitte.

I'd check how long the commute to your actual workplace is door-to-door, not just the U6 time. If you're working in Prenzlauer Berg or somewhere on the other side of the Ring, that extra transfer can add up fast. The lake is nice for summer weekends though, and Tegel has a decent Rewe and a few solid Turkish bakeries near the station.

honestly 740 warm for Altbau in Alt-Tegel is a steal these days, even if it feels like the edge of the world. i lived near there for a year and the U6 is fine but the real killer is how dead it gets after 9pm, you're basically stuck with the Späti at Tegel S-Bahn if you miss the last train. the lake is nice for a sunday walk but if you're 26 and want to stumble home from bars in Neukölln or Friedrichshain you'll be spending 40+ minutes each way and that gets old fast.

i'd say take it if you're mostly homebodied or work from home a lot, but if you're social and want spontaneity you'll prob regret it by winter. plus the U6 can be a nightmare with delays and the station itself feels kinda grim at night imo

the price is good no question but honestly your gut feeling about the distance matters more than you think. i moved from wedding to a similar quiet spot when i was 27 and it really changed how often i saw people, going from "wanna grab a beer tonight" to planning everything 2 days ahead.

the u6 is reliable enough but it's the mental distance that gets you, not the actual minutes. you end up skipping weeknight plans because it feels like a whole thing to get home.

one thing nobody mentions is the wind off the lake in winter, it's brutal walking from the station to altbau buildings. if you're someone who needs the city energy to feel alive, keep looking in wedding or find something near the ring. the savings aren't worth feeling isolated at 26

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
