Its my friends birthday and we planned on coming to berlin 3 weeks ago to celeberate but theres labors day tomorrow so is it possible that everything will be closed tomorrow? is it worth coming to berlin tomorrow or not?

Deutsch:

tbh 1. Mai in Berlin is a whole thing, not a closed city. Most restaurants, bars, spätis and clubs are open, some museums too, its mainly offices and normal shops that shut. The big deal is the demonstrations in Kreuzberg and Neukölln, especially around Kottbusser Damm and Oranienstraße, expect crowds, sirens and blocked streets in the afternoon and evening. For a birthday thats actually fun if you lean into it, grab drinks in a späti and wander, but dont plan a shopping day or a fancy sit-down dinner without booking first.

1 mai is also one of the best club nights of the year, if ur friend is into techno then thats the actual birthday plan. places like about blank and sysyphos do open air stuff that runs way past midnight, but check the lineups early bc some are demo-adjacent & political, others are pure party. for food, turkish spots around maybachufer stay open & the market at maybachufer runs tuesdays so thats not it, but the stands along the canal are usually going. honestly id skip the museum island area, it gets packed with tourists and the vibe is tense by late afternoon

heads up on the transport side, BVG and S-Bahn run a sunday/holiday schedule on 1. Mai so fewer trains and some u-bahn lines get rerouted around the demos in the evening. if your friend's bday plan involves hopping around town just build in extra time, or rent bikes, thats honestly the move on that day. also a lot of bakeries and cafés in Prenzlauer Berg stay open in the morning, so brunch is safe, its really the late afternoon that gets messy with the MyFest crowd.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
