Things to do between Berlin and Hamburg?

As the title asks - my friend and I (both 26M) will be driving from Hamburg to Berlin on a Saturday, leaving Hamburg at 9am, and would like to find one or two places to stop off and spend a few hours.… As the title asks - my friend and I (both 26M) will be driving from Hamburg to Berlin on a Saturday, leaving Hamburg at 9am, and would like to find one or two places to stop off and spend a few hours.

We were thinking nature spots but are open to any potentially interesting detours we could make on the journey!

We need to arrive in Berlin by 5pm :)

Everyone's pointing you at the A24 corridor which is fine, but you could also drop south a bit and hit Tangermünde. It's this walled medieval town on the Elbe with a fully intact brick town wall you can walk on top of, plus the oldest part of the Rathaus dates to the 1400s. It's roughly 40 minutes off the A24 near Stendal, and the Elbe floodplain around it is flat and quiet, good for a slow hour of walking before the last push into Berlin. Parking by the west wall is cheap and you'll still make your 5pm no problem.

honestly the A24 route everyone mentions is fine but you're skipping one of the best bits. take the B5 instead for a stretch, or at least detour to Hitzacker on the Elbe, it's a tiny half timbered town on a river island, maybe 40 min off your route but the drive through the Wendland is way nicer than pine forest. saturday there's usually a flea market by the old bridge and you can swim in the Elbe if the weather holds.

for something completely different, the Elbhöhenweg near Bleckede has a small nuclear waste storage site you can see from the road, sounds grim but it's weirdly fascinating, and there's a decent biergarten in Bleckede itself. keeps you on track for berlin by 5 no problem.

the A24 is mostly just pine trees tbh so if u want actual water the Schaalsee area near Zarrentin is the move, it's a unesco biosphere reserve with a little ferry crossing and quiet swimming spots. off the A24 at Zarrentin, maybe 25 min detour, then u can rejoin near Hagenow. saturday morning there's a small market in Zarrentin too, good for a coffee & a brötchen before the drive

if u want something weirder, the Biosphäre at Wittenberge has a giant old oil mill and the Elbe river right there, pretty bleak but kinda cool in a post industrial way, and it's only 20 min off the A24. both of those keep u well under ur 5pm berlin deadline

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
