What's the current safety/security situation in Berlin?

After being away for a few years and coming back, I'm wondering how people are finding it nowadays.

Feel this is a timely question as, living on a quiet street (or I thought was a quiet street anyway) I saw a man taken away on a stretcher this evening as the police chased 3 "suspects". Whole street is now cordoned off.

I left around Covid. Are things better or worse safety-wise?

fwiw the stretcher thing isnt that unusual tbh, i live near nollendorfplatz and see some kind of police action like once a month. the city hasn't gotten more dangerous overall imo, just more visibly chaotic in certain spots. if you stick to your usual routines and avoid hanging around hermannplatz or alex after midnight you'll prob be fine

It really depends on the neighborhood. Mitte and the tourist zones have gotten noticeably more aggressive with the street-level drug dealing and the occasional fights spilling out of bars, but residential areas like Prenzlauer Berg or Friedenau feel pretty much the same as before. The U-Bahn late at night is still the same mix of loud groups and quiet drunks, nothing new there. That stretcher scene you saw could just be bad luck, those chases happen a few times a month near the bigger stations.

Honestly it's kind of a mixed bag now. The big stuff like pickpocketing on the U-Bahn hasn't really changed, but I've noticed more visible police presence around places like Warschauer and Kotti compared to a few years ago. Probably feels a bit edgier than pre-Covid, but I still feel fine walking home late in my neighborhood.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
