What happens when I transfer my Niederlassungserlaubnis to a new passport in the Burgeramt? Do they make me wait 8-10 weeks for a new card or do they add a sticker to my existing card with new 'passport expiry' date?

I'm on a Niederlassungserlaubnis and the card expiry is tied to my passport. Because it is virtually impossible to get an appointment at the Auslanderbehorde, I have an appointment at the Burgeramt. Does anyone know what is the process? Will they make me wait for the new card by mail or will they add something to the existing card?

Also, on an unrelated note - does anyone know if the Burgeramt can issue a Fiktionsbescheinigung or is only through the Auslanderbehorde?

Thank you in advance for any help!

honestly the burgeramt is going to send it off to the druckerei just like the auslanderbehorde would so yeah same 8-10 week wait. the card itself has the expiry printed on it so no stickers or anything on the spot

for the fiktionsbescheinigung its really hit or miss at the burgeramt. the one at zehlendorf used to do it but they stopped last year i think. your safest bet is to bring both passports and ask for a "bestatigung der vorfuhrung" or something similar - its a piece of paper that says you handed in your card for renewal. i used that to fly back from munich once and it worked fine

if you need to travel urgently you could try the auslanderbehorde at friedrich-krause-ufer without appointment early morning, people say the line moves fast before 7am. just bring coffee

The Burgeramt will take your old card and issue a new one through the Bundesdruckerei, so you're looking at the full wait time. They won't do a sticker or any kind of on-the-spot update because the expiry date is physically printed on the card by the manufacturer.

For the Fiktionsbescheinigung, it's technically possible at the Burgeramt if they have the right terminal and permissions, but in practice most locations will send you to the Ausländerbehörde. If you're near the Friedrichshain Bürgeramt, they've been known to handle it better than some others. Your best bet is to bring both passports and ask for a written confirmation of the update instead, which has worked for me at border checks before.

You'll get a new card, not a sticker. The Burgeramt processes the update and sends it to the Bundesdruckerei, so you're looking at the same 8-10 week wait as the Ausländerbehörde. They can't add anything to the existing card because the expiry is printed on it.

On the Fiktionsbescheinigung, the Burgeramt can issue it in some cases, but only if they have the right system access. In practice, they'll probably tell you to go to the Ausländerbehörde for that. If you need proof of status while waiting for the new card, ask the Burgeramt for a written confirmation that the update is in progress, it's not as official as a Fiktionsbescheinigung but has worked for me at the Grenze.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
