Are employers not paying enough in Berlin?

Hi,

I'm living in Luxembourg right now and would like to come live in Berlin.

I have 3 years of experience in marketing and can speak 3 languages (English, French and German). I also have a double degree (masters).

From checking on Glassdoor, the average salary for my position (SEO manager) would be 45000-50000 so that's what I'm asking in interviews.

However, it's the third company telling me they're offering only 32000. Is that a normal salary for Berlin?

I'm worried I can't finish the month with that amount of money. Fellow marketers/Berliners could you give me your advice? Should I accept this salary?

Thanks in advance!

yeah 32k is low but honestly not shocking for berlin, the market here is weirdly cheap compared to luxembourg. i know seo folks with similar experience pulling 48-55k but they're usually at scale-ups or bigger international companies, not the trendy agencies in kreuzberg.

the real issue is your frame of reference. luxembourg salaries are a different universe, so 32k feels insulting, and it kinda is. but if u really wanna make berlin work, 32k net is around 1,700 which is doable if u live in neukölln or wedding with flatmates. u won't save much tho, and forget eating out every week.

my advice, don't accept 32k unless the company's giving u something else valuable, like full remote or a title bump to senior seo lead in 6 months. also ask if they do gehalt bands publicly, some berlin companies publish them on their site, that way u can see if they're just cheap or genuinely broke.

one more thing, check if the 32k is for 40h or if they're offering 35h or something. i've seen lower offers that come with a 4.5 day week, which changes the math a bit. but yeah, don't settle just cause berlin's cool, the rent's not that cheap anymore.

fwiw the 45-50k glassdoor number is prob from bigger companies or older data. the berlin market for seo is all over the place right now, some mid-size firms pay 55k+ but they're rare. 32k is what i'd expect for a junior or someone with 1 year, not 3 plus a masters.

one thing nobody mentioned: check if the 32k includes a 13th salary or bonus. some german companies do that, so the real annual could be closer to 35k. also ask about the probation period, if they bump salary after 6 months that changes things.

if u really want the city, 32k works but u'll be in a WG in wedding or lichtenberg, not a solo flat. i'd counter at 38k and see if they meet u halfway, most startups have some wiggle room. also look at the job description again, if it says "seo manager" but the tasks are just link building and keyword lists, that's not a manager role, that's an exec role with a fancy title.

the language thing is a big plus tho, german and french in marketing is rare in berlin, use that in negotiations. companies that do business in dach or france will pay more for it.

32k is definitely on the low side for an SEO manager with your profile, even for Berlin. The 45-50k range you're seeing is closer to what a mid-level role with a bit of agency or in-house track record should fetch, especially since you're bringing three languages and a double masters to the table.

The gap between Glassdoor and reality often comes down to company type. A lot of Berlin startups and smaller digital agencies will lowball, especially if they think you're just using the city for lifestyle reasons rather than career growth. They also know that someone coming from Luxembourg might not have a clear picture of the local market, so they test the waters.

That said, 32k gross in Berlin is workable but tight. After taxes and social contributions you're looking at around 1,700 to 1,800 euros net per month, which covers a WG room (700-900), transport (49 euro Deutschlandticket), groceries, and a modest social life, but leaves little for savings or emergencies. You'd be skipping the nice Prenzlauer Berg one-bedroom and any serious travel.

My advice: hold your ground at 45k, but be ready to negotiate on benefits instead of pure cash if you really like the company. Things like a 4-day week, remote days, a 500 euro annual learning budget, or a yearly bonus can close the gap without them having to raise the base. Also check if they offer a company pension contribution

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
