How legit are private real estate agents in Berlin?

My bf is looking for a place in berlin and the agent looks thoroughly legit but he's paranoid about scams. My bf is looking for a place in berlin and the agent looks thoroughly legit but he's paranoid about scams.

honestly the biggest green flag is if they're registered with the IHK or have a proper Gewerbeschein. most legit agents will show you that without being weird about it. also check if they have a real office in Berlin, not just a WhatsApp number. the scam ones usually disappear after they get the money and the apartment doesn't exist

Private agents are legit, the issue is more that they're often overpriced for what you actually get. Most landlords here still prefer direct tenants, so an agent's main value is just getting you through the door before the listing goes public on ImmoScout. If the agent asks for any money upfront before showing the apartment or signing a contract, that's a red flag. In Berlin, the standard model is the agent gets paid only if you sign a lease, usually two months' cold rent plus VAT.

Yeah, most private agents here are legit but honestly they're more of a luxury service. The real scam risk is if they want cash upfront or ask you to wire money before you've even seen the place. Stick to the ones who only take commission after you sign the lease and you'll be fine.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
