The dinosaur museum tip about the prep lab is spot on, but I'd also say don't skip the outdoor garden area behind the main hall. There are full-sized dinosaur statues scattered around a little park and it's usually empty because everyone stays inside. Great for photos without the crowds.

For the salt museum, the guided tour is only in Chinese but the audio guide rental is worth the extra 10 yuan if you don't speak it. The English version is clunky but it explains the drilling techniques way better than the plaques do.

This is a solid guide. I've been to the Dinosaur Museum four times now and it really is worth the 40 yuan, but I would add that the fossil preparation lab on the second floor is easy to miss. You can watch paleontologists actually working on bones through glass windows, and it is fascinating, especially if you have kids with you.

For the food crawl, Dongxing Temple is good but locals tend to prefer the smaller lanes off Guanghua Road for cold rabbit. There is a place called Chen Ji Tuo Tuo that does a version with extra Sichuan peppercorns that will make your lips go completely numb in the best way. Most dishes there are around 25 yuan and they serve until midnight.

If you are going to the lantern world, bring cash for the snack vendors inside. A few of the best ones don't take WeChat pay and you'll want the candied hawthorn sticks they sell near the dragon boat display. They cost about 10 yuan and cut through the spiciness from dinner.

good tips in here, esp the e-bike thing. i'll add one thing nobody mentioned: download the "zigong lantern festival" official wechat mini program before u go. not just for tickets, but it has a live crowd heatmap during peak nights, so u can see which gates are jammed and which side of the park is actually walkable. saved me like an hour last feb when everyone was funneling into the north entrance.

solid guide honestly. one thing i'd add is the bus to xianushi old town, it's line 11 and drops u right at the entrance, way easier than walking from the salt museum. also if ur into street food, the stalls near the lantern festival gates are overpriced, walk 10 min to the east side of the fuxi river, same stuff half the price. and yeah book the hotel early, i made that mistake last jan and ended up in a hostel 40 min out, not fun.

The guide is spot on about the Fuxi River night cruise, but I'd actually skip it if you're short on time and instead catch the sunset from the top of the Salt Industry History Museum's old chimney tower. It's free after you've done the museum, and you get this killer view of the old town roofs and the river bending through the city, way more local than the tourist boat.

Also, for the dandan noodles, don't settle for the first stall you see on Huayuan Road. Walk a bit further to the little alley behind the Grand Theatre, there's a place called Chen Ji that's been there for decades, the noodles have that proper numbing kick and they only charge 8 CNY a bowl. The tourist spots near the lantern festival gates will charge you double for half the flavor.

One thing the guide missed: the bus system is fine, but the real trick is the shared e-bikes scattered around Ziliujing. Download the app before you arrive, it's like 2 CNY per 30 minutes, and it makes hopping between the dinosaur museum and the old town so much easier than waiting for a crowded bus. Just be careful, the drivers here treat red lights as suggestions.
