heads up if you're going to the department store food court on central square, go before 12:30 on weekdays. the lunch rush from the office buildings hits hard and you'll be queuing twenty minutes for a seat. the dumpling stall on the far left is the one to aim for, the lady makes them fresh and her vinegar dip has a bit of ginger in it
for the spicy crawfish on binjiang road, the riverside restaurant is okay but the actual riverfront a bit further south has a few pop-up tents that do it better in summer. one guy near the yanjiang stop sets up around 6 pm and his crawfish are 58 a plate, shelled and stir-fried with extra garlic. bring your own beer though, he only sells soda
also the guide mentions the tofu stall at the railway station but the one i always go to is actually inside the bus terminal next door, ground floor near the exit to platform 3. same price, 8 yuan, but they give you more pickled cabbage on top and the chili oil is darker and richer. been going there for five years and the auntie remembers my order now
The guide is right about the Yanjiang Road food street, but it's worth knowing that the best stalls are actually the ones tucked into the alley just behind the main strip. There's a couple who have been running a cold noodle cart there for about fifteen years, and their sesame sauce is homemade with a kick of Sichuan pepper you won't find anywhere else. It's 8 CNY a bowl, and they're usually sold out by 9 PM.
For the sweet treats section, I'd add that the tangyuan at Sweet Home Dessert is good, but the real gem is the old lady who sets up a cart outside the Zhuzhou Theater on weekends around 3 PM. She makes her own osmanthus flower syrup and only does red bean filled ones, 10 CNY for a big bowl. She's been there for years and the flavor is more subtle than the shop version.
solid list overall, gets the main spots right. one thing that's missing is the late night scene around the Zhuzhou Theater after shows let out, usually around 10 PM. there's a guy who parks his three-wheeled cart right at the side entrance selling luwei, braised tofu skin and duck parts in a dark soy broth. he's been there for at least a decade, everything is 2-3 CNY per skewer and he'll ladle extra broth over it if you ask nice
for the spicy fish head, i'd actually skip the place inside Shennong Park and go to the one on the south side of the Yanjiang food street instead. it's a tiny shop with no english sign, just a red awning and a picture of a fish on the door. their version uses pickled chilies instead of fresh, gives it a tangier kick that cuts through the richness better. 45 CNY for a head and they serve it with a side of cold bean sprouts that's perfect for cooling your mouth down between bites
also the guide says 6 AM for the noodle shop on Renmin Road but they actually open at 6:15 on the dot, the lady is very precise about it. if you show up at 5:55 she'll wave you away until the clock hits quarter past. worth the wait though, the broth is simmered overnight and you can taste the depth
Zhuzhou day trips: where should I go?
The old Zhuzhou train station is being rebuilt right now, so if you're taking the train, make sure you check if you're departing from the new high-speed station at Zhuzhou West instead. For a day trip, I'd recommend taking a bus to Liling, which is about an hour east. Liling is famous for its porcelain, and you can visit the Liling Guocai Porcelain Museum to see some incredible ceramic work and even try painting your own piece. The bus from the central long-distance station on Xinhua Road runs regularly and costs around 20 yuan.
If you've got a full day, head south to Hengshan, about 40 minutes by high-speed train from Zhuzhou West. It's one of the Five Great Mountains of China, so the hiking up to the temples and shrines is solid, and the views from the top are worth the sweat. The train drops you at Hengshan West station, then it's a short bus ride to the base, and the whole trip is easy to do in a day if you start early.
honestly if you want something more lowkey than hiking, take the bus out to Yandi Square in the city center and walk around Yanling. it's a small county an hour south by bus from the main station on Jianshe Road, costs about 15 yuan. they have the Mausoleum of Emperor Yan, which is a legit ancient site and the park around it is chill for a morning stroll. the bus leaves every 30 mins so you don't need to plan too much, just grab some street food near the square before heading back
