for the xijin ferry area, there's a small museum tucked into the old british consulate that most tourists skip - the former customs house. it's included in that 20 yuan ticket and has original 19th century shipping ledgers and a model of the old yangtze river port. takes maybe 20 minutes but gives you context for why the city was such a big deal back then
if you're around on a sunday morning, the antique market shifts over to the side street behind the main one around 9am. that's where the local dealers sell to each other before the tourists show up. i found a set of four qing dynasty vinegar cups for 50 yuan total there, the guy barely looked at me when i handed him the cash
the osmanthus cakes at jiaoshan are fine but the ones at the small bakery on dongwu road near the museum are way better. they make them fresh every morning and they're still warm at 10am, 8 yuan for a bag of six. the old lady who runs it has been there since the 90s and doesn't speak any english but she'll smile and add an extra one if you point at what you want
solid tips in the comments already, just wanted to add that the walk from jinshan temple to xijin ferry is actually nicer along the river path instead of cutting through the main road. you exit the temple's north gate and follow the stone wall down to the water, takes maybe 15 minutes but you get these views of the old ferry docks and fishing boats that the guide skips
also for the antique market, the real finds are in the back corner past all the porcelain stalls. old man zhang sets up there with a tarp on the ground and sells calligraphy scrolls for 10-15 yuan. i got a legit 1990s scroll from a local artist that way, frame it yourself and it looks way better than the mass-produced stuff up front
one thing nobody mentioned - the hengshun vinegar museum has a small tasting room upstairs that's easy to miss. they pour 3 different ages for free, the 15 year is like drinking liquid gold. take the stairs by the exit, not the elevator
This is a solid itinerary. I'd add that the vinegar museum is worth a stop even if you're not a condiment person. Their aged black vinegar is miles better than the stuff you find in supermarkets, and they do tastings of different vintages. I usually pick up a bottle of the 10 year aged one for about 60 CNY as a gift.
One thing the guide doesn't mention is that Jinshan Temple gets crowded fast. If you can get there right when it opens at 8am, you'll have the place mostly to yourself for the first hour. The morning light hitting the temple from across the water makes for much better photos too.
For the antique market, keep an eye out for the old vinegar jars. Some of the smaller ones with the original wax seals go for 20-30 CNY and make nice souvenirs. Just check they're not cracked before you buy.

yeah the guide covers the main spots pretty well but one thing it misses is the old city wall ruins near beigu mountain, you can walk along the remaining section for free and there's a small museum there that explains zhenjiang's role as a river port during the tang dynasty. also if you're into tea theres a little shop on xijin street called chaye yuan that does a really good biluochun for like 30 rmb a cup, way better than the touristy places
for the cruise i'd say skip the evening one unless you like wind, the river gets choppy after dark and it's cold even in summer. the morning cruise around 9am is calmer and you can see the fishermen setting out their nets which is pretty cool
honestly the xijin ferry street is worth going to even if u just want to walk around and people watch, but the real gem is the small alleyway that branches off about halfway down on the left side leads to a tiny old temple courtyard that almost nobody visits. also the vinegar museum is free but they push their overpriced bottles hard at the end, just buy the regular brand at any supermarket for like 15 rmb instead
for food i'd skip laozhaofang and try the pot sticker place on the corner of jiefang and zhongshan instead, they've been making them for like 30 years and the line is usually locals not tourists. the cruise is nice but honestly the 40 min one feels too short, if you can find the 80 rmb one that goes further upstream it's way better cause you get to see the old pagoda from the water
also if you're there on a weekend morning the park near jiao hill has tai chi groups practicing around 7am, really cool to watch even if you're not into that stuff
i'd actually recommend skipping the grand theatre unless there's something specific you want to see, the acoustics aren't great and the seats are cramped. instead check if the old zhenjiang music hall near yushan road has anything on, it's a smaller venue but the sound is way better and tickets are usually under 100 rmb. also the vinegar culture museum is worth the free entry just for the tasting room at the end, they let you try like six different vinegars and honestly the aged one they sell for 80 rmb is legit good for cooking at home
