honestly this is a solid guide, i live in xiashan and the only thing id add is that the seafood market at xiashan fisherman's wharf is best visited before 9am if u want the freshest catch. the stalls get picked over fast and prices go up later in the morning. also the leizhou opera at the grand theatre is worth catching but check the schedule online first, sometimes they cancel shows if theres not enough people signed up. for a quick bite after, try the oyster omelette stall on jiefang road near the pearl market, its like 15 rmb and way better than the touristy spots.
yo this is a great writeup, i live out near huguangyan and one thing i always tell visitors is to bring mosquito repellent if you go hiking there, especially around the lake after rain. the trails are nice but the bugs can be relentless, i learned that the hard way
also if you're into photography, the zhanjiang bay bridge looks insane at blue hour from the promenade near the olympic sports center, like around 5:30-6pm in winter. way less crowded than the main strip and you get a cleaner shot of the lights reflecting
for pearl shopping, skip the main market on jiefang if you want better deals, there's a smaller pearl alley off renmin avenue behind the old post office. the vendors there are less pushy and you can haggle easier, i got a nice pair of earrings for 80 rmb last month
solid guide, covers the main spots well. one thing i'd add is the morning tea culture here, it's a whole thing. skip the hotel breakfast and head to a dim sum place like dechang lou on haibin avenue around 7am, they do push carts with shrimp dumplings and char siu bao for like 5-8 rmb each. it's mostly old guys reading newspapers and drinking shu pu'er, way more authentic than the tourist buffets
also for the bay bridge walk, if you go at like 6am on a weekend you'll see the locals doing tai chi in groups near the sports center, some of them are surprisingly good and don't mind if you watch quietly. just don't stand in their line of sight while they're doing the slow movements, they get annoyed lol
the pearl alley tip someone else mentioned is solid, but bring cash cause some of those old vendors don't take wechat. i got a string of pearls for 150 there that would've been 300 at the main market
Best day trips from Zhanjiang?
not gonna lie, if you want a proper nature fix without dealing with island logistics, head out to Huguangyan National Geopark. it's like 30 minutes south of the city by bus, and the centerpiece is this huge volcanic crater lake, one of the biggest in china apparently. the water is this insane shade of green and super clear, you can hike around the rim in like an hour or just chill by the shore. there's a small temple tucked into the hillside too, nothing fancy but nice and quiet. grab some η€ηΊ’θ― from the vendors at the entrance, they're cheap and perfect for a snack on the walk
honestly, if you've got a day and want something a bit different, take the bus out to Leizhou. it's about an hour and a half from the city center, and the old town has this super laid-back vibe with these ancient volcanic stone houses. the real draw is the food though, you can find some amazing η½εη (poached dog) if you're adventurous, but the real gem is the ηͺθ η², rice noodle rolls with a sweet soy sauce, way better than what you get in the city. also the Leizhou Confucian Temple is quiet and worth a wander, no crowds at all
fwiw, if you're into nature, take the ferry over to Naozhou Island. it's about a 40-minute ride from the harbor and the beaches are way less crowded than the ones in town. there's this old volcanic crater lake called Qinglan Lake that's pretty cool to walk around, and the seafood stalls near the pier have fresh θ (oysters) for like 15 yuan a dozen. just check the ferry schedule ahead of time, the last one back is usually around 5pm
