totally agree about the seafood hotpot shacks, that's where i take visitors every time. there's a lady near the xiashan dock who does a killer coconut chicken hotpot on top of the regular seafood one, she cracks open young coconuts and uses the water as broth base, adds some lemongrass and chili. it's like 70 rmb per person and the sweetness from the coconut balances the seafood perfectly, way better than the standard ginger broth.

for a completely different vibe, try the hainan-style chicken rice shop on jiefang road next to the post office. it's a tiny hole-in-the-wall run by a family from haikou, they poach the chicken in a broth with pandan leaves and serve it with oily rice and three dipping sauces. 20 rmb for a full plate lunch, and their ginger-scallil oil is dangerously good, i always ask for extra. open 11 to 2 and then 5 to 8, they close when the chicken runs out which is usually by 7:30

this guide is spot on about chikan old street but i think it undersells the breakfast culture here a bit. there's a stall at the corner of jianshe road and minzhu road that does these incredible shrimp rice rolls for 8 RMB, they steam them fresh right in front of you and the soy sauce they use is house-made, sweet and savory at the same time. it's open from 7 to 11 AM usually and there's always a line of locals on scooters.

one thing nobody mentioned is the cold noodle scene in summer. there's a tiny shop on guangdong road called liangpi wang that does zhanjiang-style cold noodles with shredded chicken and a vinegary sesame sauce, only 12 RMB a bowl. it's not a famous spot but it's perfect for the humid afternoons when you don't want anything heavy.

I'd add that if you go on a weekday morning around 9 AM, the selection is better and the prices are a bit lower before the lunch rush hits. ngl the guide is pretty solid for a first visit but they're sleeping on the morning dim sum scene in chikan old street. there's a place called lao xiang ju tucked in a side alley off minzhu road that does these insane shrimp dumplings and silky congee for like 15 yuan total, way better than the noodle shop imo. gets packed with locals by 8am so go early

also for the bay bridge walk, if you go at sunset instead of afternoon the light hits the water real nice and the bridge lights up around 6:30. the promenade near haibin park gets crowded with families then but it's a good vibe, grab a sugarcane juice from one of the carts for 5 yuan while you walk

one thing nobody mentioned is the zhanjiang museum is free on wednesdays but they close the main hall for lunch from 12-2, so plan around that if you're going day 2. the french buildings on yanjiang road have a couple cafes that do decent coffee if you need a break, the one with the blue shutters has a balcony overlooking the street

the aquarium is solid but honestly skip the hotpot place on jiefang west road, it's overpriced for what you get. instead walk a block north to a place called shunji for their claypot rice, it's like 25 yuan and way more local. also if you're doing donghai island on day 3, catch the 7am bus not later, the beach is empty and the water's calmer before the wind picks up around 10. the forest park is fine but i'd spend more time at the beach honestly, the sand there is way cleaner than the city beaches

I've done this exact itinerary and the day 1 noodle shop on Minzhu Road is a great call, that stretch has a few places that do a really good dry mixed rice noodle with minced pork. For day 3 on Donghai Island, if you take the 7am bus like the other comment mentioned and get hungry after the beach, there's a small cluster of stalls near the main entrance to the forest park that do fresh coconut water for 8 yuan and grilled squid skewers for 5 yuan each, way better than anything you'd find back on the city promenade. One thing the guide doesn't mention is the ferry from Xiashan Pier to Donghai Island also runs for 3 yuan and takes about 30 minutes, which is a nicer ride than the bus if you're not in a rush, just check the schedule at the pier the day before since it's less frequent.
