The canal area is fine for the classic postcard shot, but the real gem is the old stone bridge on the western edge of the Grand Canal, past the main tourist zone. It's tucked behind a row of warehouses, and if you go at dusk, the reflections in the still water are incredible with barely anyone around.
If you want something totally different, head to the Taierzhuang War Memorial complex, not for the museum but for the reconstructed old street behind it. They rebuilt it with authentic Qing dynasty details, and the narrow alleys with hanging lanterns give you that moody, layered look without the crowds from the main canal strip.
honestly the canal area is solid but it gets crowded with tourists doing the boat thing. if you want something quieter head to the old city wall near the east gate around sunrise, the light hits the brick just right and there's a little pagoda that nobody seems to notice.
the temple at Yishan is worth the hike up the mountain, but skip the main hall and go around back to the smaller courtyard with the old ginkgo tree. it's prob 200 years old and the ground turns gold in autumn if you're there at the right time.
for a hidden gem check out the abandoned railway bridge just south of the city center. it's overgrown with vines and the ironwork is gorgeous in late afternoon light. you'll need to park on the dirt road and walk maybe ten minutes.

honestly this is a solid plan, I've done basically this route a few times. one thing I'd add is that Taierzhuang Ancient Town is way better at sunset, the lighting on the canals is gorgeous and it gets less crowded around 4pm. also for the spicy chicken, Laojie Yipin is good but if u want a more local vibe try the hole-in-the-wall spot on Qingtan Road near the old market, it's called Wang Ji, same price but the chicken is crispier imo.
for Weishan Lake, skip the big tour boats and grab a small fisherman's boat for like 40 RMB, they'll take u through the lotus patches and u get way closer to the birds. just haggle a bit at the dock.
oh and the night market on Wenhua Road, the grilled squid from the third stall from the east entrance is the best, they use a sweeter sauce than the others. bring small bills cuz some stalls get annoyed with big ones.
