one thing the guide doesnt mention is the little taoist temple halfway up the fairy rock hike. most people rush past it but there's a monk there who'll let you ring the bell for good luck if you ask nicely. no charge, just a nod and a smile
for a change from spicy food, try the lotus root soup at laoyingtan restaurant. its mild and sweet, perfect after a day of chili-heavy noodles. they do a version with pork ribs thats really comforting on cooler days
fwiw the fairy rock hike is worth doing in the afternoon if you can time it right, the light through the caves around 3pm is gorgeous and way less harsh than midday. i went on a weekday and basically had the whole place to myself, which was nice after the crowds at longhu
one thing i'd add is the little tea house near the tianshi mansion, it's tucked behind the main hall and they serve a local green tea called yingtan cloud mist. the old guy running it will chat your ear off about taoism if you let him, and the tea is like 10 yuan a cup. good spot to rest before heading back down
also if you're into souvenirs skip the stuff at the mountain base and check out the calligraphy scrolls at shangqing ancient town, there's a shop near the tianhou temple that sells handmade ones for like 20-30 yuan. way better quality than the printed stuff
the bus to longhu mountain from the train station is easy but watch for route 1 vs route 1 express, they look the same but the express skips some stops and gets you there 15 mins faster. just ask the driver before you hop on
also if you go to shangqing ancient town on a sunday morning there's a small farmers market in the square by the east gate. locals sell fresh bamboo shoots and dried mushrooms way cheaper than the tourist shops
Day trips from Yingtan in 6 months?
you could also head to guifeng if you're up for a longer drive, about an hour east of yingtan. it's this weird rock formation park with these giant pillars and crevices you can walk through, entry is like 60 yuan and the cable car saves your legs if you don't feel like climbing. the scenery's totally different from longhu shan, more jagged and dramatic, and there's a glass bridge if that's your thing
for a quieter afternoon, the old town area near yingtan's train station has a few teahouses that've been around forever, like the one on shengli road with the creaky wooden tables. grab a pot of wuyi rock tea for 15 yuan and just watch the locals play xiangqi, nobody rushes you out
honestly Longhu Shan is the big one and you should prob do that first, it's about 30 min by bus from town and the boat ride through the cliffs is pretty chill. if you want something different, check out Shangqing Ancient Town just south of the mountain, it's way less touristy and the old streets feel more real, maybe 20 yuan entry. there's also a village called Tangzhuang that's got some Ming dynasty vibes but it's a bit of a drive, like 40 min, and the road gets narrow so rent a car not a scooter.
if you've got a full day, skip the main temple area at longhu and hike up to the viewing pavilion on the east ridge instead, the river curve below is way better from up there, takes maybe 2 hours round trip. for food after, there's a spot near the bus station called lao xiang cai guan that does a mean fish head stew with pickled chilies, about 40 kuai a serving and they don't water it down for tourists. tangzhuang is cool but honestly it's mostly rebuilt, the real deal is xiakeng village further east, about an hour drive, crumbling walls and no souvenir shops, just bring cash since the old lady selling tea eggs won't take wechat
