tbh the area around the old east gate is where i'd point you. it's like a time capsule with these crumbling courtyard houses and a tiny morning market that sets up around 6am, best fresh tofu skin i've had anywhere. the main drag has a couple of proper sit-down places too, there's a family-run place called auntie wang's that does a mean braised pork belly with preserved veggies, costs about 20 yuan with rice. it's not on any map really, just follow the smell of fried garlic from the alley behind the pharmacy

ngl I'd look around the small grid of streets between renmin road and the old temple complex. it's kind of a hidden pocket where the architecture hasn't been modernized yet and you get these tiny family-run food joints that don't even have proper names. there's a lady near the east gate who does these crispy scallion pancakes from a cart around 6pm, best 4 yuan you'll spend in yicheng. just be ready for the narrow sidewalks and occasional scooter coming through, that's part of the charm

fwiw the east side around liufang alley is kinda slept on. it's a bit of a maze with those old winding lanes but there's a baozi spot that's been there for like 30 years, xiao li's, their pork buns are stupid good at 2 yuan each. not much nightlife but you get real quiet mornings and the streets are mostly car-free which is nice
