🗺️ Orientation and Setup
Yan'an Beilu is a major north-south road in Shanghai's Changning and Jing'an districts, lined with a mix of historic villas, local eateries, and modern complexes. For this itinerary, we focus on the stretch between Yan'an West Road and the Suzhou Creek, which is well-served by Metro Lines 2 and 11. Start your day early to beat the crowds, and pick up a Shanghai Public Transportation Card at any metro station for seamless travel. The area is walkable, but you'll need to use buses or taxis for longer hops.

🚇 Day 1: Cultural Immersion
Begin at the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre (868 Wukang Road, open 10am-5pm, admission 25 RMB), a hidden gem showcasing Mao-era posters. Then walk 15 minutes to the Former Residence of Soong Ching-ling (1843 Huaihai Middle Road, open 9am-4:30pm, admission 20 RMB). For lunch, try local dumplings at Jia Jia Tang Bao (90 Huanghe Road, open 7:30am-8pm, around 30 RMB). In the afternoon, explore the Shanghai Museum (201 People's Avenue, open 9am-5pm, free) and end the day with a stroll through People's Park.

🍜 Day 2: Food and Markets
Start with breakfast at Yang's Fried Dumplings (97 Huanghe Road, open 6:30am-9pm, 6 RMB for four shengjianbao). Then head to the nearby Wet Market on Ningbo Road (open 6am-6pm) to see local produce and snacks. For lunch, visit Chunfeng Songyue Lou (131 Fumin Road, open 11am-2pm and 5pm-9pm, around 80 RMB per person) for classic Shanghainese dishes. In the afternoon, take a 20-minute metro ride to the Yu Garden area (Line 10 to Yuyuan Garden Station) and sample street food like nanxiang xiaolongbao.

🏛️ Day 3: Art and Architecture
Explore the M50 Art District (50 Moganshan Road, open 10am-6pm, free) with its galleries and street art. Then take a 15-minute taxi to the Bund (Zhongshan East Road) to admire the historic architecture. For lunch, grab a quick bite at Lost Heaven (17 Yan'an East Road, open 11:30am-2pm and 5pm-10:30pm, around 100 RMB). In the evening, enjoy a river cruise (80 RMB for 50 minutes) or simply walk along the promenade.

🚌 Getting Around
The metro is the fastest way to travel: Lines 2 and 11 run along Yan'an Beilu, with stations like Jiangsu Road and Jiaotong University. A single ride costs 3-5 RMB, and a day pass is 18 RMB. Buses 71 and 127 also serve the area, but they can be slow during rush hours. Taxis start at 14 RMB, but use Didi (the local ride-hailing app) for convenience.

💰 Budget Tips
Expect to spend around 300-500 RMB per day on food and attractions if you eat at local spots. Many museums are free, including the Shanghai Museum and the Propaganda Poster Art Centre. For meals, stick to street food and small eateries where a meal costs 20-50 RMB. Buy a metro card for discounts and avoid taxis during peak hours.

🌃 Evening Highlights
In the evening, head to the Xintiandi area (Metro Line 10 to Xintiandi Station) for upscale dining and nightlife. For a more local experience, visit the bars along Yongkang Road, such as The Beer Exchange (open until 2am). Don't miss the light show at the Bund, which runs every hour from 7pm to 10pm.

📅 Seasonal Notes
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the best weather for walking, with temperatures between 15-25°C. Summers can be hot and humid, so plan indoor activities during midday. Winters are chilly but less crowded, and many attractions have shorter hours, so check ahead.

Day 2's metro hop to Yuyuan is easier via Line 11 to Jiaotong University then Line 10, fewer transfers than backtracking.

The itinerary is well put together. Worth noting the Yan'an Beilu stretch near Jiangsu Road gets confusing at the elevated road, so use the underpass crossings. And the metro card is now just your phone's transit QR, no physical card needed.

M50 Mondays, half the galleries shut.

Shanghai hidden gems beyond the Bund?

Heading to Shanghai in two months and want to skip the tourist traps. Any underrated spots or local favorites i should check out? Heading to Shanghai in two months and want to skip the tourist traps. Any underrated spots or local favorites i should check out?

honestly skip the bund crowds and head to the former french concession around wukang road. grab a coffee at some random lane spot, the whole area has these old lane houses that feel way more real than the skyline. also check out the rock bund art museum near the south bund, it's in this old industrial building with killer views and barely any tourists last time i was there. if u want food, go to tianzifang but skip the main alleys and wander into the side lanes, you'll find a tiny dumpling place that's like 15 yuan for 10 pieces

if you're around on a weekend morning, hit up the antique market on dongtai road before it fully gentrifies. it's mostly gone now tbh but there's still a few stalls tucked near the intersection with liuhe road, you'll find old propaganda posters and weird mao-era knickknacks for like 20 kuai. also the shanghai natural history museum in jing'an is underrated, the building itself is this wild spiral shape and the dinosaur skeletons are legit impressive, plus it's like 30 yuan entry. for a quiet evening walk i'd do the suzhou creek path near the north bund but go west from the waibaidu bridge, past the old post office building, there's a stretch where the lights hit the water just right and nobody's around

yeah if you want something totally different check out the long museum (long museum west bund) it's this massive space with rotating contemporary art, way less crowded than the power station of art. also walk the suzhou creek trail near the north bund, it's kinda rough around the edges but you get these weird views of old factories mixed with new towers
